This is a call for all fans of Farewell My Lovely. I have reached out to get permission to do an updated DVD wide screen version of the film. But I need the support of the fan base to show there is a reason to do this.
Then let me be the first: Farewell, My Lovely is #1 on my DVD "Must Buy" list! I've been waiting ten years, so please give this neglected classic a top-notch DVD release!
Yes, it is a tragedy that this great noir film is not available. One of my favorite films, I will run, not walk, to buy it when it is released. My ancient VHS tape is all but worn out.
Thank you for your comment, we need to speak this word as far into the fan base as possiable. The stronger reaction the faster I can accomplish this and getting this film it's just due is my goal.
It seemed fine. It looked a bit TV-movieish, but I think that's due to the director's choices rather than anything else. I personally found it confusing and a bit trashy (being a big fan of the master stylist Chandler), but each to their own.
We are just making a deal for the first real DVD to be done.If you ever seen the film in the thearter or on a video. It was extremely stylish and very well done. When the new DVD comes out you will see a big difference.
Go for it Jack...love to see a restored wide screeen version in all it's sulky, time capsule glory...a real period piece if there ever was one...!! Will have more, just wanted to get this off quickly...!
Here's another vote to re-issue Farewell My Lovely. (My son, the film student should not be deprived of the experience of seeing this wonderful piece of film history!)
I spoke to Elloitt Kasner about doing an interview in front. And up dating the tech ability would be great. I am dying to see the film in wide screen. Great Movie!!!
Great Jack, just posted an earlier message, didn't see all of the comments that were here already. Again, go for it Jack..would be great to see this wonderful period piece in all it's glory..!! It's the summer of 1941, the last peaceful summer this country would ever have, WWII was ahead, then the Cold War and all the rest of that B.S. It would never be the same ever again...
Great Jack, so glad you are still here to participate in the ongoing DVD reissue. Some advice: if you are going to have a narrated version, give us facts, facts, facts, not silly ramblings. (When & where it was filmed, events during the filming, anything interesting that happened while filming, personal intimate observations, but relevant to the scene we are watching, very important). I say this because several old films that had narrated versions that come to mind (Vertigo, North by Northwest, The Man in the Gray Flannel Suite) had terrible, half-hearted narrated versions, by people who just rambled on about the wrong things (and even said some negative things...we don't want to hear that..why do you think we bought a copy....??!!). I think we all love to hear the technical details involved, especially a film like this with so much location footage, and intimate details about the actors. Will have more....!
This is great news! Put me down for a copy of this new DVD! I've only seen part of this film on cable in a shoddy pan-and-scan, but even the thought of Robert Mitchum as Marlowe...is just mindblowing! Mitchum is always the man I viewed as Marlowe-not Bogart. Just look at his Jeff Markham in Out of the Past (many shades of Marlowe). This is very exciting!
Dear Mr. O´Halloran, thank you for your initiative supporting a new DVD of this excellent film. I support it too 100 percent. Will spread the word around! Sincerely, Stefan Andersson Sweden
I'm in! Netflix doesn't have anything. I've never seen Farewell.
You're awesome Jack for being on these boards and talking to your fans. One of my favorite lines in movies is "Chewing gum, Snickers bar, and my attorney badge kisser."
Ok people I had a meeting the other day and we are close, to making the dream come true.We now really need as much support as we can muster to push this across the finish line.
A DVD with any commentary would be just awesome, I actually prefer something a little pricey with good quality so if the DVD is ever released I hope the studio isn't cheap about it.
The way I see it, is that we weren't retreating, we were just attacking in a new direction.
I agree an O’Halloran commentary would be wonderful. I’d pay more for that! But you know what would be a really fun bonus? (Although I’d imagine that the rights would be near impossible to secure.) In the 90’s Robert Mitchum hosted “Saturday Night Live” and he did a screamingly funny parody of “Farewell My Lovely.” The sketch even used David Shire’s terrific score from the actual move! I remember watching it when it originally aired and thinking how wonderful it was to see Mitchum as Marlowe again. I hope big Bob enjoyed putting on the fedora one more time. I sure enjoyed seeing him do it.
Great Jack...I like the last comment about "Velma"...and the memory of her....and thinking about Philip Marlowe...and the whole pre-WWII USA...totally different place...no financial meltdown then...everybody knew their place... Will have more....please keep us posted....!
I've wanted to buy a widescreen DVD of this for years - very disappointing that the only Region 2 release is pan&scan. Very good luck with your campaign to get it released - it's a wonderful movie, with a great feel and a once in a lifetime cast.

I just watched my old copy again today. Any movie designed by Tavoularis and shot by John Alonzo NEEDS to be seen with the best possible transfer. I'll pre-order my copy right now. Thanks for your efforts, Jack.
I have a VHS copy and I had a gift card for Amazon. So I thought I would get the DVD to replace my old VHS tape. I was surprised and sad to find it wasn't available. So I'll be in line to get the DVD. I just love the look and feel of the movie.
I'm so glad to have stumbled into this thread. I've been trying keeping an eye out for a dvd of this film for what feels like ages. Is there any chance that this will be released via The Criterion Collection? They have another underrated Mitchum title coming out, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, I think a Criterion of this dvd would greatly help give it's the attention that it greatly deserves.
