shareThe original U.S. release made it only as far as online resellers like the late reel.com. Then Farewell My Lovely was pulled from the American market, for reasons unknown to me. Beware of anyone claiming online to have for sale a Region 1 version of this movie for under $200. It is probably a bootleg. For that matter, any Region 1 DVD for sale is suspect. Farewell My Lovely did get released in Region 2 and 4 as a PAL DVD. It seems that the DVD in those regions is now OOP.
Your best bet is to wait for a new U.S. release, which is long overdue. Panasonic, which made the U.S. DVD, did not do that good a job. There are no extras on the DVD. But, this movie is now MIA on TV and the DVD is probably the rarest U.S. DVD starring a major actor.

Thank you for your comments on the film I always considered it the best film. I worked on and I agree the availability of it should be better.Unfortunately the only way certain things get done in the industry is the volume of demand for it.In other words enough people have to ask for it.

You may be right about some copies making it through the pipeline to retail stores, or it just may be that a Canadian reseller either ignored the recall notice or sold the DVD before its street date. The problem with this DVD is not whether it is anamorphic or not (most of the scenes are interior shots, in cramped spaces) but the inage quality of the print. Farewell My Lovely was a dark movie, and if not overdone, new digital scanning technology could sharpen the image without messing up the color timing. The fact that this movie was not part of the Robert Mitchum DVD set recently released (which includes his long missing The Yakuza) indicates a severe copyright problem somewhere along the line. Farewell My Lovely was shown on pay cable and some local stations a decade or more ago, but never on TCM, as far as I can recall. I would not sell my copy for the still high prices it fetches now at Amazon.com's marketplace, for copies there that are probably either bootlegs or worn Artisan copies rewrapped in cellophane and sold as new.

Hi this Jack O'Halloran I played Moose Malloy in the film.Thank you for your comments about the film it is my favorite film.I have a copy of the DVD which is put out by Artisan thru ITC relased by Pioneer. It is such a classic!!
shareHi Jack, thanks for your message. Do you have a website we can order it from?
You were great in the film, so was everybody else. One of Roberts Mitchum's most memorable performances! I hope to hear from you...
Regards,
Steve
I believe you can get it on e-bay if not let me know and I may have another way.
All the Best
Thanks John, I'll check it out and get back to you. A few questions for you:
1. Where were the sound stage portions of the film done?
2. Were the exteriors all filmed in the Los Angeles area?
3. Do you stay in touch with director Dick Richards at all?
4. Did you ever stay in touch with Robert Mitchum later?
5. Where do you live now?
Might have other questions for you later too. Nice to hear from you...!
Best regards,
Steve
Jack, just checked E-Bay and they only seem to have foreign region DVD copies right now (is that what they call the PAL system?). I'll do some more checking, please give us any information you have. Thanks...

I know they have it on Amazon.
shareThanks Jack, I'll check it out right away. I notice that IMDB seems to indicate it is available now (at the "Farewell My Lovely" movie site). One more question:
Was the "Florian's" scene filmed on location too (and the hotel)? Thanks...
Best regards,
Steve
Everything was filmed on location. The Hotel was down town LA.
shareWow...so interiors and exteriors were all done on location...how interesting!
I have to get a new copy and check it out! It does look like Amazon sells new copies...I'll try ordering one soon. Thanks for your quick reply Jack, I hope others come along soon too. It's all by chance really, sometimes I don't return to a particular movie site for months. I'm trying to check back more often in case something interesting happens...
Best regards,
Steve
I just received a VHS copy I ordered at Amazon (about $12 w/shipping). It was produced by AVID Home Entertainment around 1992. It's good enough for me, about the same as if you viewed it on broadcast TV. It doesn't look like this film was done in widescreen, so the smaller image is just fine. There does not appear to be any region 1 DVD's available right now (except for used ones maybe, at a very high price). Be careful of ordering one that isn't for the U.S....you won't be able to play it!

RSGRE

shareI don't desagree with you on that,I wish they would release it as well.Sometime you can get it on e-bay.

shareplease don't buy the current DVD of this classic
a very poor picture quality AND it's pan&scan
so don't support this disgrace. the film deserves a proper DVD release
AGREE IT SHOULD HAVE A PROPER DVD WIDESCREEN RELEASE IT IS A CLASSIC MITCHUM SHOULD OF LEAST EARNED AN OSCAR NOMINATION
shareYour right it is a classic,so very sad the distribution company ran out of funds and the film. Was never distributed correctly. Even today you can't get a decent DVD.And believe me I have tried to get them to do just that.
