Mr Mitchum was robbed,not even an Oscar Nomination,he should of won Best Acto for this gritty performance,,Nicholson was goon in Cuckoos Nest,,but Mr Mitchum was a revelation in this role...

Got a point;

I concur. Mitchum deserved an Oscar for his exceptional portrayal of the cynical, yet still honorable gumshoe Phillip Marlowe.

I like his work when he is being held by the goons(including Sly Stallone, but also one guy from Blazing Saddles and nearby, another guy from Rocky) and gets first yelled at and then slapped hard by the big overweight lesbian madame (who dresses in white like a nurse)

Madame: You look stupid, you're in a stupid job, you've got a stupid case.

Mitchum: I get it. I'm stupid.

And then she slaps him, brutally, again and again, and then stops.

The look on his face before he rise up and punches her(but not unconscious) is the stuff of great realistic acting: he smiles, then he's REALLY angry(and in pain), and then he decides to rise up, haul off and hit a woman. Its all there, very real, very well one.

Yes — fantastic acting there.
And throughout.

See Roger Ebert’s four-star review focusing on Mitchum’s “definitive performance.”
