Well, they run the gamut - from somewhat understandable to ones that could be pointed out to show the idiocy of going back and labeling programs with such warnings.
What scares me is that someday in the near future I would not be surprised if actual editing out of such things will happen.
Here’s a question: who is the somebody’s-brother-in-law at STARZ who is making these judgements? What credentials does he have? Other than being somebody’s-brother-in-law?
Well, here is why I disagree - such labeling may have a chilling effect upon creators and soon all of them may be going down a checklist of what can and can't be added.
I've posted this elsewhere, but imagine if a comedian like Robin Williams started to try and edit his or her own spontaneous mind.
Don't get me wrong - I get the obviously offensive part, but what also has to be considered is the intent and context of the creator, and to me, in current society when it comes to someone being "offended" the person also too often fails to determine what is the creator's intent and context.
But every generation has new taboos and sensitivities.
The greatest generation was swear words and nudity. Never heard one or seen nudity in a mainstream film before 1960.
The boomers was conformity and deference to authority. A good deal of the films of this generation dealt with the fear of conformity and challenge to authority figures.
The new generations (Y,Z) have a oversensitivity to cultural and gender stereotyping. We see it in the films/commercials/shows today that want to "free the mind of stereotyping."
Film will mostly reflect the taboo fears and sensitivities of every generation. So when a older film has the "new taboos" it will be so labeled for the new generations sensitivities.
I understand and agree with the creator part of your argument. But unfortunately there has been a power shift from creators (directors/writers/actors) to the studios.
Only a handful of directors today can dictate terms to the studios.
"but what also has to be considered is the intent and context of the creator"
Well said.
I got attacked recently on Monty python reddit community for pointing that out. The OP accused the pythons of being racist based solely on a sketch they did in the late sixties.
