Does anyone know?

The two hotels shown in the movie (lodge which Hemlock trained at in US Desert and hotel below the Eiger which the climbing team in the movie stayed at), does anyone know the names of?

reply

The hotel at the Eiger is The Hotel Bellevue located at Kleine Scheidegg in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland.
No clue on the US location.

Jeff Connor, in his recent book *Dougal Haston: The Philosophy of Risk*, indicates the hotel near to the Eiger wall stayed in by Eastwood & others was the Scheidegg Hotel. He also states that Eastwood took the introductory climbing course at the International School of Mountaineering (ISM) In Leysin, Switzerland, the director of which was Haston. (The guides who taught Eastwood "the ropes" noted he was "extraordinarily courageous & concentrated".) This contradicts other reports claiming Eastwood took his training at Yosemite.

The only way to get to Kleine Scheidegg is by train.. takes about 45 min's up the mountain!

I was there in the early 80's.. I also remember Wengen.. the town before Scheidegg!

The area still looked the same back then.. I have clips of it on home video.. let me know if you want a quick copy.. I could post a couple of quick scenes.

PS: at the end of the movie the 3 of them are behind the Hotel on a deck.. BUT back in the early 80's there was no deck and no signs of a deck back there.. must of been built just for the film!

The desert hotel is the Zion Park Lodge in Zion Park in South west Utah

Thanks for that. I will be looking up both the Lodge and Hotel for future travels.

I missed it a few weeks ago, however, Chic Scott, one of the stunt climbers (I believe he was Clint's double on the Eiger) gave a slide show about the making of the film, at a Calgary Mountain Club meeting. I was sorry I missed the event. I understand it was quite entertaining.

My mum and auntie (who) are twins, worked as waitresses at the Belle Vue when this film was made, they were extras but cut out! We spend many of our family winters, there are some great ski slopes there. The downstairs Cafe is Belle Vue does great Rosti! I think you should know though, the place hasnt changed at all since the 1970s. My mum and auntie (who were 21 at the time of filming) are not in their fifties and recognised almost every bit! If you want anymore info, please feel free to contact :D

We mustn't dwell... no, not today. We CAN'T. Not on Rex Manning day! Damn the man! Save the Empire!
