is it just me or does the whole plot not make sense??

SPOILERS!

Right, so the organisation knows that it's one of the climbers Clint needs to kill.
Yet, his old friend only goes to the Eiger with him in the first place BECAUSE Clint needs to go.
So how did they know in advance then?
It's just really unsatisfying..

(Oh well, the film was quite a bit of brainless, sexist, macho fun in its own way anyway.)

This movie blows. Too many loosely and disjointed sub-plots. It left me shaking my head.

first off....
Is Hemlock a good guy or bad guy?
What was he paid to do?
Was George Kennedy's character just a friend or was he in on the plan?
What is the significance of the opening scene where the man is lethally injected?
Why climb the Eiger to find a killer?!
An Art Collector/ teacher/ secret agent??? Uhhh. How? Why?!

reply

you need to watch the movie again and pay CLOSE attention!!

Even half way thru the movie CLINT explains to Jemima why he wants to RETIRE!! from all that crap that he does in the movie.
Pay close attention to the part where he talks about.. "They kill one of ours we kill one of theirs.. what do these killings mean?? nothing.. totally barbaric"

WATCH IT AGAIN.. once you see what its all about then youll understand

I guess that explains the confusion I had. You have to admit that it's a bit far fetched.

Couple more questions...

Is Hemlock's primary profession a secret agent who happens to be an art connessuer, or is it the reverse?
Why did Cassidy play his Miles so effeminitely? Did that really matter?

Henry Baq wasn't lethally injected, his throat was cut to get to the microfilm he'd just swallowed.

reply

Miles is written as a gay in the book and the movie. In fact a good many of his lines are taken straight from the book.

And Henri Baq (in the movie) and a different guy altogther (referred to as Ageny Wormwood in the book) has his throat cut all the way down to his stomach to retrieve the swallowed microfilm. Nasty.

George Kennedy worked so well in the part, didn't he? When I re-read the book some time later, I could only "see" George as Ben - something that rarely happens for me.

This movie STUNK.

Don't waste your time watching the movie again. If you couldn't pick up on at least some of the questions when you watched it the first time, you'll never get it.

1. Hemlock worked for the "good" guys. Even he claims you can't tell the difference anymore.
2. He was an Art History professor who was a paid assasssin on the side.
3. Ben was a friend. It is revealed at the end that he also was an assasin/courier but for the other side.
4. Henri was a courier and a friend of Hemlock. Because he was a friend, Hemlock was willing to out of retirement.
5. An informant told Dragon that the killer was going to climb the Eiger. The climb had nothing to do with intrigue, it was just where he was going to be.
No one knew which "climber was the assassin and Dragon thought it was one of the climbers, never realizing that the "ground man" (George Kennedy) was considered part of the team. Since Hemlock was a climber, having him involved would give him a chance to determine who the killer was.

See, I just saved you two hours.

And it wasn't that hard to pick out the plot points you raised - just a little concentration!

George Kennedy is always good value!

It was the only worthwhile reason - Airport 80 also had Alain Delon, so maybe that was worth watching too....

Ambiguity and anti-heroism are the point.

What was he paid to do?

... assassinate individuals.

Was George Kennedy's character just a friend or was he in on the plan?

He was a friend yet also Hemlock's target, unbeknownst to Hemlock until the end.

What is the significance of the opening scene where the man is lethally injected?

He was an old friend of Hemlock's whom Kennedy's character didn't want killed.

Why climb the Eiger to find a killer?!

The intelligence asserted that one of the people on the expedition was the target.

An Art Collector/ teacher/ secret agent??? Uhhh. How? Why?!

Secret agents can't collect art? And Hemlock was teaching because he'd retired before being recruited (blackmailed) out of retirement.

An archeology professor as treasure hunter and "secret agent"? Absurd... who would make such a movie (or four of them)!

Answering the OP, Ben Bowman was originaly planned to go for the climb but only he did not tell Dr. Jonathan Hemlock about this at the start. but he tells him during their training together that he is also scheduled for this.he didn't go there "BECAUSE Clint needs to go"

reply

YOU SAID:

"Yet, his old friend only goes to the Eiger with him in the first place BECAUSE Clint needs to go."

ACTUALLY: his old friend was already part of the team. Jonathan finds this out early on when he goes to train with Ben.

reply

The American climber who was originally supposed to go was hurt and Clint was his replacement, but Kennedy was planning to go as the ground man for the team the whole time. He didn't go only because Clint was going; he would have gone regardless. That is all explained in the movie.

reply

Correct.

"I am not a complete idiot, some parts are missing."
