great remake potential

I watched THE EIGER SANCTION; it really has great Remake possibilities. With the success of Bourne and Casino Royale there is an audience for this type of thriller. All I kept thinking when watching it was that it seemed dry, like a big chunck of the book was missing. If the characters and story were flushed out more it would be great. I enjoyed watching the film but felt it did not hold up well because the screenplay was weak.

The trouble is that although the movie followed the book as closely as was possible, it was still necessary to make some cuts to the text - as it is, the movie is over 2 hours long.

Although the book doesn't feel as if it has any "flab" about it, it is difficult to translate to the screen and loses pace in that medium. Any attempt to remake it would result in CGI mayhem, explosions, and who knows what else!

Another issue with the movie is that it relies on the very dry wit of the book - and this translates poorly to the screen where the viewer doesn't have time to mull over what's been said. And the style of humour is difficult for some people to take. Which is why Airplane! did better at the box office a few years later.

... exactly, C.G.I. gimmickry would replace the phenomenological authenticity of the mountain climbing sequences. Additionally, a re-make would lack the film's cultural and social eccentricities.

Remake potential?
Like
Wicker man?
Alfie?
Get Carter?
The Italian Job?
The Ladykillers?

Great remucking up potential agreed.

And if the parody and pastiche aspects of the movie's themes was hard to understand then, they'd go straight over most peoples head now.

Please leave well alone.

happy to leave well alone, but Eastwood f'd the book up and the movie is muddled. it needs a re-make solely on the basis that it sucked.

What the $%*& is a Chinese Downhill?!?

reply

You're crazy. Eastwood didn't mess up a thing in his career. It's a great action film filled with memorable humorous dialogue, great acting, the mountain climbing sequence is a classic by itself. Why screw it up? Remakes suck.

reply

I agree, remakes generally suck.

But how about a sequel? They could call it "The Denali Duel" and have Hemlock come back for one more sanction job, this time on Mt. McKinley in Alaska. They could even have Eastwood himself play the role of Dragon this time. And Beyonce would be a great Jemimah Brown. Put in Matt Damon as Hemlock. Ben Stiller as Ben Bowman. And how about Salma Hayek as George ?

Ummm, no.

I would like to see Disney do a remake and title it "The Matterhorn Sanction". Here is the synopsis. The maintenance crew of the Matterhorn ride at Disneyland comes to realize that one among them has the ear of corporate and has gotten former crew members fired for criticizing the company's penny pinching ways. In an attempt to cut costs the company has let maintenance standards slip to the point where ride malfunctions have resulted in injuries and even death to park visitors. The crew received a tip that the rat fink who got the former crew members fired has a bum leg that causes him to limp when the weather dips below 50°F. (Hey, this is southern California, and 50° is considered cold at night.)

When the co-worker with the bum leg is identified after overnight temperatures in January dip into the 40s the other crew members plan to get him to ride alone in one of the bobsled cars which conveniently has brakes that don't function. You can guess what happens next. Oh -- Vanessa Hudgens takes over the Jemima role.

It would have to be reworked a lot.

The movie is quite dated.

But I could see it with, maybe with Jim Caveziel playing Hemlock.
