Hemlock's rescue

Excuse my ignorance, but exactly how does Hemlock's 'buddy' (the George Kennedy character) reach him?

I know there is a railway running inside the mountain, but he appears from a shaft exiting onto the mountainside at the top of the north face! (and, conveniently, right in front of where Eastwood is hanging)

So to any Swedish posters, or anyone who knows about the mountain: were any such tunnels dug?

reply

The train tunnel slants diagonally left and up across the face as we look at it from the hotel, it's used primariy to take tourists to near the top and where the rescue takes place is around halfway up the face, where you can see the holes in in establishing shots if u know where to look.

Well, the tunnel has been there ever since it started getting its reputation, so I wouldn't think so. One infamous story is about a party where the last survivor on the face was hanging close to the tunnel but they couldn't get to him and had to leave him hanging there for the night. His dying words were "I can't go on", I think, as they tried to rescue him from the tunnel the next day. I think his name was Stefano Longhi.

Sorry Chris, Swedish posters won't be able to help. The Eiger is in Switzerland, not Sweden..
