And also, even if yes, or if not, why did he look scared and vulnerable throughout the whole heist until SPOILER police shot him?

The real "Sal" met Sonny at a gay bar so presumably he was closeted. He was only 18 at the time of the robbery and as a teenager had been sodomized in prison.
