The car scene at the end- SPOILER

a follow up to the "did Sonny sell out Sal" thread: I just watched this and was curious about how the FBI agent got access to the gun he shoots Sal with. Earlier in the bank, Sonny confiscates a handgun from someone which led me to believe that Sonny plants that same gun in the limo when he's doing his 'search', so the FBI/COP could access it. So I believe yes, he did sell out Sal.

Or am I reading it incorrectly?

reply

I don?t think Sonny had the time or the frame of mind to hide the gun that well. The driver was actually a cop pretending to be an airport employee so he's probably one who stashed the gun.

reply

But Sonny even searched the car for anything like that and didn't find anything so when did the cops have the opportunity to plant the weapons?

reply

They might have had time to plant the gun in the car when Sonny took the driver inside to prepare everyone for leaving the bank.

I don't believe he searched the driver's door, it was opened when he was looking in the car...

Apparently in the real-life case there was a .38 caliber handgun hidden in the front seat of the limousine that John John Wojtowicz missed when searching the limo upon its first arriving at the bank.

Interesting.

My view was that the FBI detective-driver had the gun in a hidden compartment on the door that Sonny didn't know about.

There's no way Sonny hid that gun or predicted that the detective would shoot just Sal and not both of them.

The gun was in the arm rest of the drivers door. You can see the F.B.I agent fold it down when he said that he was ready.

The revolver was planted by the cops in a hidden compartment of the driver's door. The cop disguised as the original driver and the agent Sonny chose to drive both knew about it, because it was part of the plan. Sonny had no way of knowing about it. He didn't sell out Sal.

Quite a well timed move on the FBI man's part. He had to grab the gun, swivel around, take the killshot. All in one move. Without shooting any of the hostages or messing up the kill and leaving Sal to open fire while dying.

I was always impressed by the physical logistics of this moment.
