I wonder why they showed the WTC in the opening montage when film is set in 1972 and the towers weren't done til 1973. Also the movie marquee in opening montage is A Star is Born, which also came out in after post production on this film. (I know same screenwriter wrote both films.)
For what it's worth, they didn't have the means to digitally remove something like that like they do today but I guess they could have just showed a different part of the city.
Hi, I'm Chandler... could I BE wearing any more clothes???
I am also disturbed when I see the Towers in movies; there's no getting around that it makes you think about that horrible day. Ok, since I am a weirdo I looked up World Trade Center on Wiki and here is what it said: "The topping out ceremony of 1 WTC (North Tower) took place on December 23, 1970, while 2 WTC's ceremony (South Tower) occurred later on July 19, 1971.[50] The first tenants moved into the North Tower in December 1970; the South Tower accepted tenants in January 1972.[52] When the World Trade Center twin towers were completed, the total costs to the Port Authority had reached $900 million.[53] The ribbon cutting ceremony was on April 4, 1973." I am kind of surprised how early they allowed tenants in the building. Hope you don't think I'm being a know-it-all, it's just that your post made me curious. One more bit of trivia in my head I don't need.
I grew up outside New York at that time. They might not have been finished in '72, but they were certainly part of the skyline. Had digital tech been available, they might have shown the towers at whatever part of completion would be appropriate.... on the other hand, the inside was not finished until well after the shell.
In the 1973 movie "Godspell" (which was shot in '72, presumably around the time of the robbery), Victor Garber finishes his song "It's All for the Best" atop one of the unfinished buildings and then it pulls back to show the two towers -- the combination of the song, visuals and the film's biblical connotations is totally creepy in hindsight.
A Star is Born showing on the movie theater marquee really puzzled me. I am pretty sure it came out in late 1976, and this movie came out in 1975. What's up with that?
The only possible explanation is that the theater was showing the earlier version of the movie that had Judy Garland in it.
I don't think they took this into consideration when making the film. Or maybe they figured the towers were close enough to complete (the actual incident that this movie portrays happened only about eight months before the towers opened) that it wouldn't be a big deal.
They did it because they knew you would object and they wanted to piss you off. Actually i posted exactly the same observation. The WTC was almost done; we would have seen some construction at the top had it been chronologically accurate. The other things are: "there'll be hamburgers on the plane". What if Sonny was a vegetarian? In any case planes don't serve hamburgers, this should've tipped him off.
This is too picky and wrong. The WTC would've been mostly completed by then and there were earlier versions of ASIB. You could've figured this out yourself.
I know. Some of these people are total nitwits. "Why did they show the World Trade Center?" Because it was already there.and part of the NYC landscape.
