One of the best NYC movies ever!! What are some others?

This is one of the best NYC movies ever filmed. The city is a huge part of this movie. The city's look, feel, vibe..........it's like the city is a character in this film.

What other movies would you consider to be great NYC films?? Some that occur to me are Lee's "Do The Right Thing", Scorsese's "Mean Streets", and Friedkin's "The French Connection".

The 1957 film "The Sweet Smell of Success" starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis has a similar feel in which the city itself is a character, just as you described.

try Taxi Driver!

I'm robbing a bank because they got money here. That's why I'm robbing it.

Bringing Out The Dead also written and directed by the same duo as Taxi Driver.. underrated movie.

Goodfellas, The Godfather (I & II, maybe III), Donnie Brasco, Taxi Driver, The Long Weekend, Blackboard Jungle, and Do the Right Thing are a few that come to mind.

Also the Hustler, which seemingly occurs in New York (the book takes place in Chicago).

Sunday in New York (1963) with a young Jane Fonda

Surprised no one mentioned any number of movies by Woody Allen, where NYC is almost another character: "Annie Hall", "Hannah and Her Sisters" -- and, of course, "Manhattan", with fireworks exploding over the skyline to "Rhapsody in Blue."

reply

I agree--certainly Woody Allen is what I think of when I think New York movies.

A recent movie I saw was "Please Give." It really nailed New York culture from the old school generation through the middle-aged wealthy class to the yuppies.

No one's mentioned Quick Change yet?

That's probably because no one has heard of it.

Good choice with Quick Change.

The funny thing is I was thinking about Quick Change when watching this (again) the other day but I wouldn't have thought of it for this question.
