The funniest part...
When Leon is walking down the street with the police officers, looking all dazed and confused. - Sonny: "Hey, Leon...happy birthday!" (Leon faints from overwhelming terror)
That part just cracked me up.

Check out the scene when they are first questioning Leon, he tells his story to the cop in charge and in the background you can see a cop start to smile, then snicker.

Party, it was a totally different world in 1972. I was a Junior in High School in 1972 and anyone with gay feelings stayed way in the closet. If you "came-out" better be ready for lots of snickering, beatings, and total harassment. By people in authority like cops and teachers, and anyone who thought you were queer would make your life miserable. Hence, lots of suicide and self medicating with drugs weed and booze.
On top of it all you had to, all alone, know every waking moment you are "different." Kids and adults today can kiss in public and hold hands with their gay lover, much easier in 2017.
I just looked up Where Is Sonny, after prison he married a woman, lived on welfare and died age 60 of cancer in 2006 at his mother's home.

The news broadcaster: In Brooklyn where Homosexuals are holding up a bank I busted out laughing....something you don't hear everyday.
shareWhen the news showed Leon and his wedding dress in that black-and-white picture the young cops giggled and said "queer". You don't see that these days either. I watched this movie in 1975 at the movie theater, a young 20-year-old college student. One of my top 10.
share"Well I'm a Christian and my ears are not garbage cans"
shareSonny picks up the phone and says. "We play all the hits". Broke me up the first time, and every time since. Gotta figure Pacino improv'd that line. It's just too perfect.
