There might be, but I think this was along the first batch because

1) There was already a laserdisc release of it (easy transfer)
2) There's a small following who have been waiting for this to be released - instant sales for the Warner Archives group.

This is a NEW transfer.

reply

Well, that's even better then. The only thing I'm really curious about this release at this point is if there will be any sort of extras on the DVD.

reply

Probably not, only a trailer if one was available.

These discs are "Manufactured On Demand" depending on how many people want to buy them. They aren't mass produced like regular DVDs, which is why they won't be available in regular stores.

reply

Yeah, like the man above me pointed out, the Manufactured On Demand line is filled with obscure titles. I don't think it means much outside of fishing for buyers.

reply

Basically Warner Home Video only release catalog titles on regular DVDs if they estimate sales of at least 20,000 copies. This Movie On Demand service makes it economic for them to sell DVDs of titles where they only think they would sell a few hundred or a few thousand copies.

There aim is to have their entire library (about 6000 films) available on DVD, in the original aspect ratio, within the next 10 years. Which is quite astonishing considering it has taken them 12 years to release just 1100 of their films in their archive on DVD.

reply

Well yeah, but I've seen the bootlegs from Asia up on eBay and they had extras of some sort (I think they may have just been filmographies of everybody), so I had assumed they had just come off the laserdisc release. To which, I assumed that if they were doing a straight rip of the laserdisc, the extras would be included too.

reply

I have the laserdisc and it doesn't have any extras on it at all. I've been tempted to buy one of the bootlegs but never did.

Instead, I ordered one of the "legal bootlegs" (DVD-R) from Warner.

reply

At least when you buy the Warner Home Video edition you know you are supporting the company that actually owns the copyright to the film. And who knows, if enough copies sell they may revisit it with as a regular DVD with extras down the track.

reply

I wouldn't be surprised if all the movies that are up right now on Warner's new buy on demand service are in the company's short list for DVD releases.

reply

The new DVD looks quite nice. Anamorphic Widescreen and a clean print used for the transfer. The transfer is Interlaced (vs. Progressive), but that's a small quibble.

It is a DVD-R (as Warner has advertized) and comes with pro-covers.

The only extra is the original theatrical trailer.

reply

Well, having the trailer is more extras than any previous official release has had, in the states or in Germany. I'm curious as to whether it will contain parts of the film not available from earlier masters. Also, if something ever gets properly released, Ron Ely has stated he would like to add audio commentary.

reply

There are no extras on the DVD. The Warner transfer is very nice; nothing spectacular, but this is a decent anamorphic DVD. The sound is mono.

We report, you decide; but we decide what to report.

The one available from Warner is not a full frame version. It is anamorphic widescreen. It has not been remastered but it looks very good.

"Important Note: This film has been manufactured from the best-quality video master currently available and has not been remastered or restored specifically for this DVD and Digital Download release." Thanks, I'll stick with my official German DVD, even if it's fullscreen.

reply

Thanks - got the DVD from Warner - proper professional quality, 16:9 widescreen with original monoo soundtrack.

Saw this at the cinema when it came out.

I'm perplexed why there was no sequel, especially as Raiders Of The Lost Ark popularised this genre a few years later.

There was no sequel because the film bombed. The real question is: why did it bomb? My answer is, because it was produced by George Pal, and who was not up to the task of making a contemporary action film that would have satisfied *all* ages. Instead, the film reeks of being made to entertain kids 12 years-old and under.

reply

They now have a pre-listing for a November release on Blu-Ray!

This is through their MOD program, so don't expect any extra features.

reply

I got my Blu-ray in the mail today. No, it doesn't look like there are any extra features, but I'm sure that the picture quality will be decent, at least.

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!
