Politics betw. Actor and Writer

I notice that one of the writers for this movie was Christopher Trumbo, the son of the famous Dalton Trumbo who was blacklisted during the 1950s. In light of John Wayne's politically conservative views, I wonder if Dalton, Christopher, or the Duke ever said anything about Wayne starring in a Trumbo movie.

reply

He and Richard Attenborough were also politically polar opposites.

reply

I think Wayne was politically opposite to many directors ,writers and actors he worked with in his career.

Its that man again!!

I can't say I agree with the Duke's politics, but I sure enjoy his movies!

TRUE GRIT had been adapted into a screenplay by Marguerite Roberts, a former Communist, and Dalton Trumbo was not one to harbor grudges. I doubt by the mid-Seventies any of them gave a crap just so long as they didn't discuss politics.

reply

John Wayne didn't give a sh*t about Rock Hudson's being gay and he and Katharine Hepburn got on famously despite being political polar opposites. The same holds true for Lauren Bacall. For all we know, Trumbo and Roberts might have discussed politics with Wayne with all of them being respectful of each other as people.

I may not like Duke's or Heston's politics but that doesn't stop me from watching their films.

I hate it when people won't watch certain actors based on same it's just plain silly.

My experience has been that folks on the right won't watch actors etc who lean left.

I'm a conservative but I absolutely agree with you (vpilutis) on this point. I couldn't care less about an actor's politics. I watch movies for the enjoyment of movies! I watch and enjoy many movies starring conservatives (such as John Wayne) or liberals (such as Susan Sarandon). One of my favorite John Wayne movies is "In Harm's Way" which also stars Kirk Douglas who is a political opposite of John Wayne. In fact I "own" and very much enjoy numerous Kirk Douglas movies. Anyway, my point is I may or may not agree with an actor's politics but that in no way prevents me from enjoying their movies! For example, I wouldn't vote for Al Franken but that doesn't keep me from watching him in movies (He was hilarious in "Trading Places)." Another example is Paul Newman. He was quite liberal and I would not have voted for him had he run for office but he was one of my favorite actors. I have a fairly substantial Paul Newman collection and I enjoy those movies very much, such as "The Sting." One of my favorite movies of all time!

On my short list of perfect films.

Yeah I could care less about an actors politics.
I did read that Burt Lancaster (Democrat) refused to work with Republicans. It doesn't take away from him being a great actor just makes him a dick. (If true)

reply

He worked with Gable.

Thanks Ellis, yes "Run silent Run Deep" some good stuff on the board over there.
In the trivia it says they didn't get along but not because of politics but of Clark Gables age.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that he didn't get on very well with Olivier either. Maybe B.L. was a stuffed shirt? Regardless, I've never been a fan. That's not to say that I loathe him or some such, just that I don't get him.

I thought he was good in everything he's done. He kind of reminds me of Kirk Douglas with his intensity.
