fish
Did they ever find out what killed so many people who ate fish early in season one?

Food poisoning I believe.

I'm not aware of any food poisoning that could be caught from fresh, river-caught, well-cooked, fish in the UK that would be likely to kill everyone who ate it. Fish that's allowed to go off would of course be dangerous, but wouldn't explain the character's hesitation to eat river-caught fish later on.
However, Survivors is just a story, and trying to super-critically examine everything in the story for hyper-accuracy is in my opinion, silly.
Hence, fictional "food poisoning" as in the previous post is the best answer that can be given here.
There was some speculation by Charles that the Death virus had somehow got into the water or was being carried by the fish, but since this subject never cropped up again, I think we can presume it was probably some serious food poisoning that killed them.
