What was the truth about Sherman Hemsley's personal life?

I kind of hate to bring this up but was it widely believed or accepted that Sherman was gay (even though if he was, he remained closeted his entire life)? I mean, he lived with his "friend", was a lifelong bachelor, was intensely private, and had no heirs when he died.

These are the facts.

He and Weezie lived in a deelux apartment in the sky.
They had a sassy maid Florence who loved Billy Dee Williams.

The man was a good entertainer; perfect as George.

I guess his life was personal.
However his heir was a woman named Flora Enchinton. (No idea what his relationship to her was) Trouble was he had a brother who he had not seen in decades who swooped in and stole everything out from under her. My understanding is that Sherman had signed the house over to Flora before he died but without the money from his estate she didn't have the means to maintain it and it was foreclosed on.
