Was slamming the door in Bentley's face funny?

I know it often evocked laughter when George would slam the door in Bentley's face but I never got the humor of it. While Bentley could be grating and annoying at times he was always kind-hearted with the best of intentions. The humor just escaped me.

LOL..I thought it was usually funny because it highlighted George's irreverent humor and that's what made the Jeffersons so funny! The outspoken irreverence of joltin George! He just couldn't wait to get rid of Bentley!

It was what Bentley was saying while it happened, I think. And the joke is that George just didn't want to hear what Bentley was saying. As for Bentley, he wasn't a bad guy, although I wouldn't like a neighbor myself who kept coming over asking to borrow things. I'd be, "Doesn't this guy have any money from his job to buy the stuff he needs himself?"

The funniest was in "Not So Dearly Beloved" when Bentley annoyed George and then all George said was, "Door, Bentley." and then Bentley casually walks out into the hallway and then slams Jefferson's door on himself.  I thought that was TOO FUNNY! 

Oh, yeah. I had forgot that one. Hysterical.

Yeah, it was Bentley knew the drill. Not long after that Paul Benedict left the show for two years. I wonder why?

reply

I often wondered that myself. I guess he had the sudden urge to go paint some random numbers... 

No, that was before Jeffersons. Maybe he wanted to do something else for awhile? At least they left the door open for him to return in later years.

He left to pursue other projects.
