I forgot how good this was!

I remembered enjoying this series as a teenager, but I am now watching it as an adult and I am really impressed. I remembered loving Jim Hutton and David Wayne, and they are still perfectly cast in these roles. What I had forgotten was the great guest stars that they had and what a wonderful job they did with the 1940's era re-creations. It has great theme music, too!

I hope they do release this on DVD sometime.

I was just watching Mystery of the 12th Floor Express -- the plotting was really fantastic! Why haven't all the good shows been released?

Is Ellery Queen playing in reruns anywhere in the USA? I sure would like to see it again (saw it as a child and loved it) and would love for the DVD's to be released also.

reply

Why was there only one season?

I loved this show too.

I remember reading that NBC felt the program didn't appeal to the masses because it lacked action [=violence]. Some fans feel that it may have been considered too intellectual. Remember, it's the same network that canceled Star Trek...

The story I heard was that the show was up for renewal, but it was right on the line of being renewed/being dumped. Then a program/actor NBC wanted more came along. A show had to be dumped and it was ELLERY QUEEN. (The same thing happened to MY WORLD AND WELCOME TO IT; NBC never could tell a quality program from a hole in the wall.) A real pity. I don't see EQ as lasting for years and years, but I think it could have had a nice two-to-three year run.

reply

Sigh...

Such a shame!

It could have so much been a part of the NBC Mystery Movie lineup -- like Columbo, McCloud and McMillan -- that forth slot never stayed filled long! I'm old enough to know from the first time around!

reply

A two-year run would have been perfect. Later, they would have had to find a new Ellery and the show probably would have gone downhill eventually. Two seasons would have been perfect! Oh well, a lost opportunity!

Although it isn't an official release, there are a number of online places selling sets with all of the episodes. The quality is reasonable.

I purchased mine at the Vintage Playhouse, and have to say that it was worth it.

Not sure how useful this will be to others, but I have Metrocast cable and get to see it Sundays at 6:00 PM (RTV, channel 20).

Tonight's episode is 'The Adventure of the Comic Book Crusader'. Cast includes Lynda Day George, Donald O'Connor, and Tom Bosley. Coincidentally, first commercial was for Bosley Hair Transplants. :)

My thoughts entirely. The theme tune has hanuted me since my youth. Great that the BBC has finally started showing them again - worth staying up late for!

I just re-discovered this awesome show. A local Chicago station, ME TOO has begun playing Ellery Queen on Sunday afternoons. This was a show that definitely should have lasted longer than 1 season.

That being the case I will treasure my home made ones and make an extra copy for the strong box, like i have other shows I am in love with!

This was one of my favorite series as well. After seeing the series I started reading the novels.

reply

Me too!

What really makes me mad is there is a guy who sells the series - one season, including the pilot -on IOffer and EBAY for a hundred bucks a pop and claims he has the "rights" to it, because it is now in public domain, which just isn't true. But he is getting away with it!

So unjust!
