David Wayne

I've been going on and on about Jim Hutton for a long time now.

Now I want to know who else is a fan of David Wayne.

He was fantastic as Richard Queen in this show.

I loved him in the film How to Marry a Millionaire.

He had a small part in O'Henry's Full House, and he was adorable in that role.

He was so charming in The Tender Trap!

His character in The Three Faces of Eve sure was disturbing!

David Wayne seems to be best remembered for his supporting role in Adam's Rib. Somehow, I don't remember him in this movie, nor do I remember the film itself.

Now if only I could find the remake of M. He is the star of that remake.

If only David Wayne had played Ellery Queen in the fifties! He would have been just right for the role.

Any other fans?

I'd never even heard of that remake of "M"! I'll have to check it out; it has a good rating on IMDb.

It's hard to find. I'll have to dig deeper to find this gem.

I just saw 'M' today. It's really good! I knew that Fritz Lang was outraged that Seymour Nebenzal went ahead and made it without his input, but I think it was more because he didn't get any credit for having originated the idea than because there was anything wrong with it. In some ways I like it even better than Lang's 1932 original German version. It's a bit faster and tighter than the original (Lang liked very long movies).

Wayne is terrific as the killer. It's interesting how he's not really *hidden*, but somehow we never quite see his face until about halfway through the movie. It's like he's just slowly coming into focus; we can't really identify him because we never quite see his face in a clear angle. It's a very good performance. I guess before this he'd played lighter comedy roles, and of course I know him as Richard Queen, a rather stolid, deadpan character. But here he's a crumbling shell of a man. When he puts his head down and sobs because he can't conquer his demons, you almost feel sorry for him; or you would, if you could forget how horrible his crimes are.

It's only at the very end he speaks much, and he has quite a soft voice, with a gentle Southern accent. That's when he's making his confession. When he's being dragged away after he's been captured he screams and struggles like nobody else I've ever seen onscreen! It's just shockingly raw and real. Highly recommend this movie.

I adore David Wayne. I really liked him in The Andromeda Strain.

He was the original OG in Finians Rainbow on Broadway, also the original Ensign Pulver in Mr Roberts.

But my all time favorite David Wayne moment was on an episode of House Calls, when he performed September Song, my all time favorite.

It is not our abilities that show who we truly are...it is our choices

I haven't seen any of those! That House Calls episode sounds kind of neat.

I looked for it on youtube -- no luck...:-(

I admit that I forgot to look for it! I've been so busy with the Columbo episodes that I haven't been bothering with anything else...not even Ellery!

Columbo is very cool -- I grew up with that show, and have all the eps of DVD now. The movies they did later are okay, but the 90 minute ones were way better.

Good old Levinson and Link -- you just can't beat them.

BTW if you have a decent connection on Youtube, you should look up a little Gem called Rehearsal for Murder -- Great Cast! Robert Preston, Lynn Redgrave, William Daniels, Patrick Macnee and Jeff Goldblum.

Also good is "One of my wives is missing" with jack Klugman and James Fransiscus...

nitey nite!

I think that 75 minutes was the best time for the Columbo episodes. In most of the 100 minute ones, it was obvious that they were just filling up the extra time with unnecessary scenes.

Have you seen the show Banacek (early seventies show)? I'm watching an episode in which David Wayne is the guest star. So far, I'm very impressed with his acting! That man could play any male character IMHO.

The man could do anything... from an uncaring husband in Three Faces of Eve, to the Mad Hatter in Batman, to a leprechaun on Broadway... and everything in-between.

Also good guy roles (How to Marry a Millionaire, The Tender Trap) and extremely evil guys (one episode of The Twilight Zone). I found him to be quite scary in The Three Faces of Eve.
