Underrated?

I've looked at a lot of rankings of the Bond films. This movie seems to consistently go on the bottom of all the lists. Sometimes it's on the very bottom, sometimes it makes it within the bottom five, but whether on a website's rankings, or in IMDB forums, this one just seems ALWAYS to be on the lower end.

But I really like TMWTGG. I actually think it's one of the better ones. Not THE best one - Sean Connery is too classic to allow that - but by my book, certainly in the top five, and maybe even in the top three. I think Maud Adams and Britt Ekland were both great Bond girls. I think the action succeeds in always keeping your attention. I think this movie is seriously underrated.

Does anyone else think so as well? Or am I the only one here who sees it as a good part of the Bond canon?

I didn't like it that much at first but it started to grow on me as i watched it a couple more times. I wouldn't say it's in my top 10 but it's still good and underrated i think...

Totally underrated, if that's the case. I'm halfway through watching the series for the first time, and I'd put Golden Gun in at least my top five.

I love it. It's not the best, but I'd put it above all of Brosnans.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines

I fully agree. VERY underrated.
Sean Connery really is my favourite Bond but man oh man, I can't get past thinking that this really IS my favourite Bond movie. No questions asked.
Exotic locations, humour, fascinating story line AND a villain without pity. It's got it all.
BTW, I'm not really big on explanations or speeches (so why am I here right???), maybe my favourite Bond movie short list will speak slightly more eloquently for me.
Thanks for your time.

1. The Man With The Golden Gun
2. Diamonds Are Forever
3. Live And Let Die
4. Goldfinger
5. Dr. No

Glad someone else has got taste.

For me TMWTGG , LALD and DAF are three of the most underated yet consistantly critisied Bond movies, why? i have no idea, a lot of bandwagon jumping i think.

Same as the Brosnan movies, ask anyone who moans about Brosnan to tell you what it is about his films EXACTLY and they remain stumm, suddenly its cat got your tongue time.

For me TMWTGG , LALD and DAF are three of the most underated yet consistantly critisied Bond movies, why?

They represent (along with Moonraker) the most self-parodying and "wet" humor Bonds available. It's basically, "we know this is silly, so let's have fun with it" rather than "let's tell you a great spy story" and that turns off a significant portion of Bond fandom.

In some ways, I think they feel "lower budget" than many other Bond entries (even if they are not, looking that their bottom lines). But they seem to have gotten somewhat away from the "epic" set pieces and more sophisticated glamour of many other entries. From the opening credits to the casino set pieces, these flicks are steeped in 70's leisure suit casualness, which only makes Bond in his tailored suit stand out (when of course, if he was trying to be competent, he should want to blend in...)

For me, TMWTGG turns me off because they make Bond so freaking incompetent throughout. And the script is so transparently lazy, it just frustrates. I still like it, but it's second rate compared to what they could have done.

For example, Bond carelessly discarding his nipple disguise right outside Hi Fat's home after their meeting, so that anyone watching (and indeed he is being watched) sees him blow his cover immediately. What kind of spy does that?

Or all the waggly, blinking mannequins. Sheesh, they can't reshoot or stage those shots so that I can't tell they are people? If I can tell, why can't James Bond? Isn't he supposed to have observational skills and be trained to expect the unexpected?

And of course, the slide whistle. And Goodnight getting captured rediculously. And pushing the button with her ass. And Moore's typically awkward faux martial arts. And the sheer number of times TMWTGG goes out of its way to make Bond the "butt" of the joke, so to speak, from Bond pointlessly grabbing the sumo ass (thought the twisting of the thong was less ludicrous) to NicNik kicking Bond's ass multiple times, literally and figuratively.

This movie is just frustrating for those who prefer a more serious take on Bond. Which is why DAF and most of Moore's entries get a bad rap.

That all said, I still like TMWTGG. But people who prefer, say From Russia with Love or Craig's Casino Royale do have actual reasons and might not merely be bandwagon jumping and cat got your tongue time.

To me, the Bond franchise tends to do this (devolve into self-parody) whenever they feel they've earned and audience and don't want to lose it so they start pandering to it. Whereas, Bond hits its higher notes when they feel they must earn an audience (or win an audience back after a down note). Which is why, in general...Dr. No, FRWL, Goldfinger, OHMSS, TSWLM, Goldeneye, Casino Royale, tend to be the critical darlings of the lot. The producers were feeling desparate and pulled out stops so to speak.

I can't understand why people dislike this movie also. Of course many people prefer serious Bonds rather than Moore's charismatic and funny Bond, but despite a few silly scenes this movie is a solid piece of entertainment and fun. Those scenes would be Bond grabbing the sumo's ass and the completely unnecessary dumb slide whistle. I rather have Moore with a good movie and a few silly scenes, than an all the way serious Craig delivering a poor movie such as QOS. Also, the movie had its moments like Scaramanga's demise that was just genius to me.

TMWTGG ranks among the best bonds, Live and Let Die is good but not among the best, and Diamonds are Forever is the weakest of all bond movies. It tries to be partly serious and funny, but fails at both in the end.

This is clearly better than any of the Craig, Brosnan, or Dalton efforts. It has a John Barry score that really works as well as interesting locations and beautiful women. True, the geography is out of whack like many of the films (Bangkok has no hillsides or frontage to the sea). The gun assembled from parts was a first rate idea. This film actually has a plot with some interesting aspects too it, and the energy crisis element has become very relevant once more.

But most of all it is the last film in the series with a really good villain. Christoper Lee is different (according to Lee he played his as sort of an evil alter ego to Bond) than those who went before and quite good. Every villain since has been lackluster, probably hitting rock bottom in the last film (what a whimp). Villains are essential to a good Bond film, so I would probably judge this a better than outing than any that followed it.

The biggest negatives include that ridiculous slide whistle and some scenes with JW Pepper. In 1974 I found Roger Moore too cold and stiff but his performance has grown on me in the years since.

I have no good reason and suspect that monkeys possess some sort of soul. Geode

(one of the problems I have with Live and Let Die is that IMO it was something modeled for Sean Connery)

So was TMWTGG. Remember him hitting Scaramanga's girlfriend? Only Sean Connery could have pulled that.

Moore finally became comfortable in TSWLM and kept it up ever since. I think he looks good in TMWTGG, though. Really good.

And yes, I also find this movie to be (somewhat) underrated. I agree very much with p-king2. (The nipple thing: His cover was already blown...) Britt Ekland was such a stupid Bond girl they should have just scrapped her.

But indeed... what I think this film is lacking is a bigger cast. Not necessarily cast, but on the island, it's just two people except Scaramanga. You expect more people in a Bond film. Something grander. I think that's what makes people "hating" it.
