Wow, Redford was completely wooden

Watching this one after having seen the recent remake. Redford stinks on ice. In the scene where they meet, he shows no signs of actually being nervous or apprehensive. Leo did this 100 times better.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

I agree he was wooden, but then, that's Redford being Redford. He's always been a limited actor - his forte was looks and screen presence, and that's about it.

The story is that he was totally obsessed with the Watergate story while shooting Gatsby... he couldn't wait to get back to his trailer and read the newspaper or watch the television coverage.

I thought he was pretty good in the role myself, though I agree that he and Mia Farrow had zilch chemistry. Mia just didn't do it for me as Daisy. IMO Carey Mulligan was much better.

BTW I find it hard to believe the producers seriously wanted Marlon Brando to play "young" Jay Gatsby and it was only his salary demands which stopped him being cast. He would have been 50 at time of filming, in which case his war experience may have just about had to relate to the Civil War rather than WW1.🐭
