SAM WATERSTON

I am one woman who would rather have Sam Waterston over Robert Redford. I mean the real men and not the characters they play in "The Great Gatsby". Any other women out there who think like I do?

reply

Yep Sam Waterston is better than ole Robert Redford.

I read The Great Gatsby in my English class in High School. Later that year the movie premiered. I was disappointed in the movie but remember the young actor who played Nick Carraway, Sam Waterston. Sam carried the movie. I recall he was nominated for an academy award for best supporting actor.
I've been a fan ever since.

Waterston was not nominated for an Oscar for this movie.

SAM WATERSTON IS THE REASON I WATCH "LAW AND ORDER". DID YOU SEE "JUST BETWEEN FRIENDS? I THINK HE HAD A THING FOR MARY TYLER MOORE, BUT WAS TOO MUCH OF A GENTLEMAN TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.......ROBERT REDFORD HAD HIS DAY..........BUT HE WAS HOT WHEN HE WAS IN HIS PRIME.........

I'm a Robert Redford girl, although I think Sam Waterston is a much better actor. Ever since I saw The Way We Were I thought Robert was totally good looking...of course not nowadays but in the sixties and seventies he was off the hook. Sam Waterston is good looking, but not in the same way for me.

not a chance
redford is BOSS

I could not agree more for I think Redford is the BOSS as you say and he still is to me

I really liked how this cast worked together--and Sam Waterston was a very appealing and sexy Nick. Redford was excellent as Gatsby--so much intense determination and drive; you really believe he was able to make his situation of wealth happen. I'm surprised critics panned this version.

reply

I prefer Waterston over Redford, in general, in anything, but I think they were rightly cast here. Did not know about Natalie Wood, and it is a shame, for the reasons stated, although Farrow has a more ethereal quality than Wood, who's generally earthier. Might be their hair/eye coloring has something to do with it, for me, at least.

I saw Waterston on stage in HAMLET in New York around the time this film came out and he's a good actor, but he has no personality and was miscast as Nick.

reply

What?

The man is Nick in the flesh and Nick is a bit of a wet blanket character wise.
