A better Daisy

It's too bad Natalie Wood was asked to do a screen test for the role of Daisy; everyone involved should have known what a talent Natalie was. It's also a shame that Natalie didn't drop her ego long enough to do the screen test. Natalie would have knocked the Daisy role out of the park!
What a shame.

Well, from the casting perspective, I suppose Farrow was the perfect actress to play a hysteric, spoilt nitwit. But on the other hand... well, she`s about the most annoying, grating broad ever to have appeared in movies and here her unfortunate qualities were even amplified due to the nature of her character; whenever she was on screen, the entire thing turned into a pure endurance contest (which it was a bit already, thanks to the portentous, stilted tedium of the whole thing). But Farrow... words fail me. Absolutely horrible, horrible...

She. Was. Horrible.

Oh, thank god!!! I thought it was just me. Mia Farrow, irritated me throughout the movie. I couldn't see how *anyone* would be fighting over her character, Daisy.
I *hated* the movie. But, now I'm thinking, if there had been another actress like Natalie Wood in the role, it would've been better. Redford, is a handsome face, but there isn't anything there with him.

I have to agree with you.

Katherine Ross was apparently down to the last 5 for casting. I would have liked to have seen her pick up the sun hat.🐭

reply

Natalie looks Russian. She could have played Anna Karenina NOT Daisy.

Ali MacGraw almost got the part, but she dumped Robert Evans for Steve McQueen so she was out. She would have been worse. No offence to Ms. MacGraw. Farrow was miscast too.

reply

Oddly enough, Ali Macgraw would have been closer to type. Daisy is a brunette, it is Jordan who is the blonde. But I agree she would have been miscast. Macgraw was the modern girl of the 70's. She had a style that just wouldn't be Daisy.

Geraldine Chaplin would have been great for Daisy. But she was nowhere near the star status of Farrow or Macgraw.

reply

Barbara Hershey could've covered it, not sure of her age at the time though

reply

Hershey wouldn't have been bad (not blue blood but not that ethnic looking). She was the right age at the time (25 or 26) but she had no star status at all. She was doing guest spots on Kung Fu and other TV shows.

Like Macgraw she had that 70's modern girl look that wouldn't have been right for this role.

That's funny… because Mia was actually my favorite part of the film.

This film made me convinced that I'm a fan of hers, in fact. Because in it, I found myself liking the way she sounds, the way she delivered her lines, and the way she looks. In other films I've seen of hers in the past (admittedly few), I never liked the way her character was styled, so that would distract me from enjoying her. Such was not the case this time, so I was able to really soak it up, becoming a real Mia fan!

She's so cute – and I love the way she says things in this movie!

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

I think Mia was perfect. Fitzgerald wrote the Daisy's voice was full of money. I always thought Mia captured that. Her flighty selfish spoiled rich girl was spot on.

Tuesday Weld was considered too.
