Michael’s obsession with having another son

He already had two kids, a son and a daughter. So why does he go and on about this third child being a boy? What if the third child was a girl? Would he have not cared about the abortion? What if the third baby was just like Uncle Fredo?

He probably wanted at least as many sons as Vito had.

If it was a girl, I don't know what he wouldn't have cared about the abortion. He probably would've but maybe not as much.

Heh... probably right.

The more sons, the more potential heirs to keep the family going. After all, you have to account for the fact some of them are highly likely to be killed.

Fair point. He really seemed obsessed with having that second son. Kay was getting older and probably not going to have a huge line of children. Besides didn’t he want the family business to become legit? Was he disappointed his older son was sensitive and artistically inclined?

I think the whole legit business thing was to appease Kay

I don't think so. I believe he really did want the Corleone family to go legit and had it planned before he even met Kay.

"Kay, my father's way of doing things is over, it's finished." ~ Michael Corleone

That he never managed to extricate himself from his father's lifestyle is part of this tragic story.

He could always have Al Neri take him fishing...

Remember, Michael was his father's 3rd son, and he ended up being the one who took over the family business. So that was probably at least part of the reason he wanted multiple sons.

If it was girl, he would still love her, but probably be at least a little disappointed. He still had a great relationship with Mary in part 3, and would probably push for his daughters to marry guys who would be strong allies in his business.

Would they have known the gender of the baby at the time of the abortion? I always wondered if Kay just said that because she knew it would burn him even more. He still would have been insanely upset at the abortion if it was a girl, but more for a boy.

And if it was like Fredo, well hopefully Anthony would be a good boss, and always have something for his brother to do.

And may your second son be a Masculine son!

This is another sticking point. Remember Anthony was the grand kid present when Don Vito dies of his heart attack in the tomato garden in GF 1. They allude a few times to Anthony as being troubled some how like he is mildly retarded or possibly gay. IOW not fit to be the heir.

This is a kid who was old enough for his first communion but draws pre school type picture of his dad in a car. None of this is explained well and it is a weak point in the film.

Michael in a meeting with his sister also talks about how her oldest son victor was "picked up in Reno for petty theft" which makes no sense at all. Her oldest kid would not be that old. In GF 1 her and Carlo have no kids that you can see do they?
