Time period?

What century does this film take place in? Late antiquity or early-mid medieval period? I know the book was first discovered and expanded upon in the 9th century but there isn't any clarification or dating in the film. Are we to presume the stories took place in pre 9th century?

Many of the stories in the book are believed to have originated in the sixth century at the earliest.
