Is it appropriate to watch this together with a family member and not to come out as a pervert?

Well, if you know them well enough..maybe..to me it was thought provoking movie with some content that shall we say wouldn't be suitable for everyone. I wouldn't watch it with my closest relative and with my friend i'd seriously have to think about it..they would have to like arthouse/grindhouse..italian horror films..

Would I rather be feared or loved? Um.. both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.

I advise anyone just to avoid this pretentious nonsense. Bad acting, writing, special fx (but some good cinematography at least) all add up to a terrible adaption of the book.

Bull!! Yes, the acting leaves much to be desired but in other areas this fits the bill. This story has always been presented as a fantasy and Pasolini conveyed that with brilliant costumes, locations, etc.
Nothing pretentious about it.

If you have very small kids, perhaps you should better avoid it. If your kids are age 10 or up, my opinion is that it is more than appropriate. Not because it's "safe". It's not. It will inevitably arise questions about what perversion is. You will have the chance to point at the joyous, natural, unashamed sexuality that is shown throughout this movie. And you will have the opportunity to show to your kids how bigoted, perverted and detached-from-life is any program they see on TV, compared to the honest, clean and physical sexuality glorified by Pasolini.
Absence of sex is not necessarily pure. And exhibited sexuality is not necessarily dirty. Most people never get the difference. I suppose this movie is an excellent starting point to discuss this issue with your family.

The only people that I have ever known who enjoy watching this film are gay.
