What a lousy movie

"Death Wish" was a very popular movie when it premiered, because it addressed a serious problem plaquing NYC at the time: rampant crime. Back then, NYC was the most dangerous large city in the United States. Going to Central Park at night was risking bodily harm, rape, theft or murder. Taking the subway after sunset was tempting fate as it had become a haven for criminals. Vandalism was rampant, graffiti was everywhere, slums were spreading out, the middle class was leaving and NYC had become a place of derision.

Thus, the movie hit a cord, yet, looking at the movie now, its pretty lousy. For one thing, Charles Bronson had to be one of the worst actors around. He acting is so flat, he shows no emotion even when he finds out that his wife has just died and the criminals are caricatures with leather jackets, switchblade, bandanas tied on their heads and spray cans. They walk around with stereotypical, exaggerated thug gestures. They look like cardboard characters. To say that the movie lacks subtlety is an understatement.

Death Wish is a classic. In 1974 (and today...) crime is everywhere. When I saw Death Wish at the Alhambra Theatre at 18th and Geary (the movie theatre is long gone) it's the only movie I remember people standing and cheering an applauding at the end. They didn't do it at Jaws, Star Wars, Godfather but they did at Death Wish. My friend George Winterz from Queens said, "I thought they only did that in New York City??" Death Wish was not a provincial movie. It spoke to people in towns big and small. Bet they cheered it in Pueblo, Colorado. Death Wish was about good and evil, right and wrong. How do you feel about the movie?? Ask your heart. I love the way Paul Kersey has the law and the City of New York between a rock and a hard place; can't arrest him (what jury would convict him??) can't let him walk around the streets with his .32 (I thought it was a .38?!?) (Why not let him walk around?!? I say blow the bastards away!! They pull a switchblade on me, BANG!! You're dead!!) The movie touches raw emotions. The best pieces of art do. Death Wish is a great piece of art. John Flanagan

PS Quickly, Charles Bronson's wardrobe in Death Wish is outstanding! His shirts, suits and tie, his long coats; notice his clothes the next time you see the movie. I remember thinking in 1974 when I first saw the film, "Wow! Paul Jersey looks terrific!" If I'm ever gunned down I'd want someone who looks like that to do it! Ha Ha The last "mugger encounter" Charles Bronson is wearing turtleneck, long coat, Wow! When he's shot in the leg and crawls under the pipe, notice his shoes and slacks, I thought "Wow ! He's down in the dirt, but he looks good!" If I find out more about his wardrobe person I'll pass it along. Good job! John

Lol, watching DW for the first time and I also noticed his great wardrobe. And abs on a 53 year old? Wow!

I agree. It's stereotypical junk. NYC was never that bad, only in propaganda movies like this one.

1974: NYC had 1,919 murders
2019: NYC had 558 murders

So it was almost 4 times as bad as it is now

I disagree, I think it's a classic. Pretty groundbreaking for the time, and still socially relevant. Even if the sequels were more "comic book-ish" in tone, it doesn't take away the impact of the first film and its importance.

As for your criticism of Bronson's acting, I just can't agree there either. Take for example...when he comes back to his apartment after shooting the mugger. That was very good acting there imo.
Also his reaction(that you didn't like)when he found out about his wife's death, is not uncommon at all. Especially in men.

You're of course entitled to your own opinion, but I just wanted to express why I think the film worked.

The other thing worth notating,, is that unlike other movies after it, he never got revenge on the actual 3 guys who attacked his family, you just never seen or heard of them again. He acourse didn't even see them or know who they were..that was rare in itself...

reply

Yeah that was really surprising that they didn't get dealt with !

reply

Everything you said is true but that doesn't make it a lousy movie.

reply

Its garbage, all 5 films are gunspoitation with terrible, terrible acting. Watch the 1978 I Spit on Your Grave if you want solid revenge film!

I really loved this movie. Yes, the acting was awful (when has Bronson ever given a good performance?) except for the Frank Ochoa character. What I loved was the cat and mouse games as a vigilante (especially the subway), the bleak atmosphere, and most of all, the ridiculously tacky early 1970's vibe. Every fiber of this movie reeks winter 1973-1974. Burnt orange hues, bright red carpet and furnishings, messy and shaggy hair, lime green carpet in bathrooms, wallpaper with a tinsel color to it, etc.

I like all 5 of the movies!

When I was in my teens, my mom and I took the train to New York, when we lived on the east coast to a function we were invited to at night. As we got out of the train station, we were surrounded by a big gang of guys who circled us, a cab stopped and was just looking, me and my mom took a run for the cab and jumped in . Another time, my mom would take me to see agents for acting in New York, one time we came off the subway and went to use the restroom, this lady pulled a blade on her and we just kept walking and she followed us, this was in the day hours. and this was years and years after 1974 (the making of this movie) so I believe New York can be bad

reply

Note to self, stay the hell outta New York!!

reply

Stupid response. So, what, let the criminals just have the city? Hand it over to them?

reply

Not really. If it's between protecting your family and self or risking them, I choose protection.

Criminality comes and goes. When it's bad, Don't engage if you don't have to. If you live among it, you're not wrong to leave. New York City had a big turn around after the 80's. It became a nice place. It's been going back into a situation with more criminal behavior. So I don't plan to visit currently. If it changes for the better, then I just may. Though, the rest of the state is genuinely nice.
