Cindy Williams as Ann
During the elevator ride in which Ann happens to stand next to Harry Caul, does she know he has a recording of her conversation with her extramarital lover? I reviewed the DVD trying to establish that, but I can't.

shareIt seems possible that she does. The movie's dénouement implies heavily that Ann and Mark have been in collusion with Martin Stett. If the three of them went so far as to plan the Director's murder together, Stett probably kept Ann and Mark posted about who had been hired to gather the evidence of their infidelity. They may even have chosen Caul themselves.

I looked at it again, and didn't see any indication she recognized him.
Two ways to look at it:
- She really didn't recognize him. She could have known (as she presumably did) that she was being recorded in the park, and either not known the identity of the surveillance expert, or not known what he looked like. It would also have to be the case (I think) that she didn't take notice of him or remember him from the park. That's quite possible. He was pretty close to her at one point, but she never appeared to notice him.
- She was pretending not to recognize him. I wonder whether that might have been Coppola's intent. Maybe we were supposed to wonder, "Hey! Why didn't she recognize him from the park?" and think something was a bit off. An interesting thought. Of course, if it had been too obvious (if she had clearly taken note of him at the park, as she did the other guy), it would have been too much of a giveaway.
It's all very ambiguous. Certainly she knows who he is during the 2nd scene when they happen to encounter each other - the reporters abound, etc. But either way is valid. Perhaps it was a total set-up from the beginning. Perhaps there was nothing to it.
