It is common conception that this quote first appeared on Good Will Hunting but Jake says it here after a phone call.

It is not common at all, only idiots think Good Will Hunting, or for that matter Chinatown, invented it.
it's a figure of speech obviously. What sense would it make if they say it themselves for the first time?
Are you referring to the expression itself or the way it was used in Good Will Hunting? The expression obviously predates Good Will Hunting, but the way what's his name in Good Will Hunting inverted it slightly to rub that Harvard guy's nose in the dirt seemed novel.
