Both are two of my favorite films of all-time. Every time I weigh the pros and cons, I'm still unable to decide. Right now I'd say Chinatown, but yesterday I thought GF 2. I know it's the Chinatown message board so it'll be a little biased, but it'll still be fun to talk about these two awesome films.
Chinatown is my favorite movie so I obviously will say it is better. But I actually like The Godfather over The Godfather Part II. Most people give me sh*t for that but I don't care.
Lol I don't understand why people give you sh*t for liking the first Godfather over the second. The first is regarded as arguably the greatest film ever made, while, the second which is probably the greatest sequel of all-time, isn't regarded as highly. I personally prefer the second, but the first definitely feels more like a classic.
Just saw Chinatown again for maybe the tenth time in 42 years. The fact that even 42 years on, people are debating unresolved plot points from the movie is a testament to its greatness. It's not sloppy writing on Towne's part, he just didn't want to present you with all the facts as in lesser whodunnits.
I love both these films, writing, acting, score, but if I must choose one favourite it must be Chinatown. Godfather II is a perfect sequel/prequel, but that fact alone makes is less perfect as an entity and a piece of film art. Chinatown is just the perfect entity for me.
The two films have their merits but one aspect that is not close at all is the score.
The far more unique and imaginative score to Chinatown completely runs circles around The Godfather Part II whether as a piece of art or as a perfect entity.
