What Happens To The Baby? Spoiler Alert!!

I finally got a copy of 'Beyond The Door.'

The first time I saw this movie I was a kid.
I remember being scared silly watching the scene where the dolls come to life.
The only other scene I remembered was the beginning where you see Jessica naked in a satanic ritual.

Having seen the movie again, I thought it was awful.

The only two questions I have is this?

In the beginning of the movie, you see Jessica in some type of satanic ritual with Dimitri and she runs away. Is this how she became pregnant in the first place?

When we finally get to see the baby, the baby has no mouth. Strange.

At the end when you see Jessica, her husband and two kids, you don't see the baby.
I just wondered whatever happened to the baby. Did Satan take it?
I kind of figured out what happened to Dimitri.

I always thought that when Robert finds the baby in Dimitri's clothes, it was dead-stillborn and without a mouth. The mouthless thing is just another one of those weird, unexplainable flourishes that makes "Chi Sei?" so disturbing.

Right! Dimitri is desperate for the baby to be born because---the way i put it together--he (Dimitri) was to be reincarnated in the baby. That's why the baby was in his clothes and Dimitri gone. The baby was stillborn (and without a mouth) because, although the devil kept his bargain with Dimitri, he never promised the baby would be born healthy, whole and alive! The king of lies had the last laugh on him.

boinnng, you hit the nail right on the head!!! That was the whole point of the ending----the Devil always has the last laugh!

Wow, holy Jeebus, you got it. Hahaha. Thanks.

God, I wish you directed the movie and not this crazy, confusing guy.

Couldn't have said it better. I caught this unintentionally hilarious Exorcist rip off back in the 70's at a rancid theatre on 42nd street. I think the other film on the bill wasw Airport 1975. Wow, having flashbacks to packed & hot old Selwyn, one of the best grindhouses on The Deuce (what we older cranky NYers used to call 42nd St)

*Spoiler*

So at the end when their little boy turns around on the boat and his eyes are glowing, does that mean he's possessed by Satan or did Dmitri enter his body?

reply

The demon led Dimitri to believe he would be reincarnated into the body of the baby, but revealed before the birth that he was only using Dimitri for his own amusement. When Dimitri entered the body of the newborn, it was killed by the demon, who then turned to the next likely victim, Ken, for his own vessel. (See the Quotes page for dialog between Dimitri and Jessica (as the demon) for further understanding.)
