Airport 1975--Not as Good as I remembered it to me.

In the winter of 1974 Waterford, MI had a major power outage. To keep warm My Mother, Dad, and I went to movies. One of the films we saw was "Airport 1975". As a twelve year old I thought that this movie was great. In 2004 this movie, along with "Airport, Airport 77, and Airport 1979-The Concord" were released on DVD as a set for $21.99. I bought the set and watched "75". I was disapointed as an adult to find that this was one of the weakest of all in this series. It's my opnion that "77" is the best of all of these films (others may not agree). If you like any or all of these movies you should buy the DVD set. For $21.99 you can't beat the price. Bryce

This film is a guilty pleasure. It may not be good or well made but i watch it at least once a year for the sheer pleasure of the nostalgia in watching it. I remember seeing it johannesburg in south africa in dec 1974 as a child. It was shown in a huge cinema with a huge 70mm screen that curved. The result was that you had to turn your head from side to side to see the plane in full. Wonderful stuff. I also remember the magical effect of flying over the mpountains when viewed in huge 70mm

I remember those huge, curved screens...the first time I saw STAR WARS was on a screen like that.

If you are high on "E" even a small flat screen TV has that effect! Hee hee

The film was released as a big holiday season blockbuster in 1974. It was a subject of discussion in the aviation community. Mainly speculation on whether certain aspects of the film were technically feasible. It was not seen as an atrociously bad movie at the time.

I recall flying home for Christmas in 1974, and spending time at the newsstand in the Jacksonville FL airport. Two airline pilots were browsing a magazine in which there was an article about the film. They were debating whether a helicopter could pace a 747, and lower a person through a hole in the cockpit.

The deprecation of all aviation disaster movies has become group think, since the success of the "Airplane" parody movie. Before "Airplane", nobody thought these films were that bad.

The original ''Airport'' got Helen Hayes an Oscar-not just a nomination, though I think it was Maureen Stapleton who deserved it. ''Airport 1975'' may be silly, but I still enjoy it. Probably because I remember 1974 as a great year. (At least for me).

Disaster movie have not aged well. They are almost unwatchable these days. And 70's fashion was horrible.
