In the winter of 1974 Waterford, MI had a major power outage. To keep warm My Mother, Dad, and I went to movies. One of the films we saw was "Airport 1975". As a twelve year old I thought that this movie was great. In 2004 this movie, along with "Airport, Airport 77, and Airport 1979-The Concord" were released on DVD as a set for $21.99. I bought the set and watched "75". I was disapointed as an adult to find that this was one of the weakest of all in this series. It's my opnion that "77" is the best of all of these films (others may not agree). If you like any or all of these movies you should buy the DVD set. For $21.99 you can't beat the price. Bryce
I agree with you, the Airport movies really have not aged well. The movies themselves are pretty weak and its hard to watch them without thinking of airplane! Although Airport 1975 is bad I think "The concord-Airport 79" is the worst of the set. In fact I would put it up there as the worst disaster movie ever made.
"pack of monkeys in my pocket, my sisters ready to go"
I thought this movie was good, and I am an aviation-type person. It seemed somewhat half-hearted, pumped up with big celebrities and somewhat boring jokes. They could have made this movie more thrilling by having the fuel leak start a fire, make the private plane hit the 747 at 20,000 feet to stimulate explosive decompression. Also, the stewardess' constant screaming started to get on my nerves.
AGRI COLA! Now with Diet and Atkins Diet Offerings
Well I saw it for the first time last night and really liked it. I thought Charlton Heston and Karen Black were both excellent and the score was also excellent. The only problems I could think of were that it is sometimes impossible to take seriously as a result of the spoof Airplane! and I guess it hasn't aged very well. It seems like no-one likes it when they see it again though.
"LOOK MAN! I AIN'T GONNA FALL FOR NO BANANA IN MY TAIL PIPE!"
I can't even watch the scene where the nun sings to Linda Blair (thats just hilarious in itself) without wanting to see a smiling man look down from the ceiling, and without completeyly cracking up. Thanks Airplane!
It's funny how the colors of the world only seem really real when you viddy them on the screen
I'm relieved to hear that your maturity allowed you to see clearly what a piece crap this film is. This is another of those "so bad it's funny" movies...you juts have to laugh...it's the only way to keep from falling asleep. As for which movie is the best, I have to disagree with you there...the first film, 1970's AIRPORT beats the rest, hands down. I absolutely love that movie and could watch it a million times.
I saw it back in 1976 as a double with Earthquake[i had seen Earthquake before but not Airport 75]and thought it was a totally boring load of crap.In my older years i still think it is a load of crap but will sometimes tape it when its on tv just to watch it for a laugh.Linda Blair makes me laugh,Helen Reddy as a nun makes me laugh,Charlton Heston trying to act makes me laugh[he was much better in Earthquake]especially when he is calling Karen Black baby and honey all the time[cringe]and that turtle neck he wears in some scenes cracks me up.Karen Black trying to look frightened is also priceless.
Earthquake is so bad it's GREAT! I can't even imagine seeing it back to back with '75... that would be heaven! George Kennedy and Charlton Heston as dueling good guys in both... what more could you ask for? Oh yeah, Ava Gardner!
This movie is another of my guilty pleasures. I think it's hysterically funny and always find myself giggling when I watch it...Charlton Heston trying to be a macho sex symbol calling Karen Black "baby"...Karen Black as the cross-eyed stewardess trying to land a crippled 747 jet airliner...Gloria Swanson dictating her life story on the plane...Dana Andrews'crazy heart-troubled private flyer who runs his private plane into the jet...Linda Blair, fresh from her triumph in THE EXORCIST as an apple-cheeked kidney transplant recipient, and of course, Helen "I am Woman" Reddy as a singing nun? How can you not just sit back, stick this one in the VCR or DVD player and just laugh your ass off? Not to mention Jerry Stiller as a passenger who sleeps through the entire flight...How can you resist? This movie is too funny.
Comparing "Airport 1975" to "Airport" is like comparing an episode of "General Hospital" to "Schindler's List." See my post of February 18, 2006, under the "Airport" thread entitled "Any Chance of a Re-make."
I'm glad someone else realizes that Airport was a real movie and '75, 1977, and Concorde were schlock. Too often the original Airport gets lumped in with the rest of the franchise and '70s disaster movies as a whole. Airport had an actual plot, worthwhile character development, and a pedigree based on one of Arthur Hailey's well researched and excellent novels. It is a GOOD movie. I love the other three, but let's be honest... they're crap. '75, 1977, and Concorde belong in the same grouping as The Towering Inferno, Earthquake, The Cassandra Crossing, Kingdom of the Spiders, Empire of the Ants, and that one with the bees! (LOL) Airport got Helen Hayes and Oscar nomination, and rightfully so. Although it has its cheesy elements that we laugh at, when you get down to it, Airport is a solid, good movie.
One slight disagreement (although go to the "Airport" message board to see how much we agree). Although I definitely prefer "Airport" to "Towering Inferno" and "Poseidon Adventure," those three films are so far above anything else in the disaster film genre, it isn't funny. It's like comparing the three "Godfather" films to all the other organized crime movies.
I think the movie you're referring to with the bees was called THE SWARM. It featured Michael Caine, Katherine Ross, Henry Fonda, Fred MacMurray, Richard Widmark, and Patty Duke (Astin) among others, if memory serves. Total junk.
That was just the type of pathetic film that ended the genre, although for all intents and purposes it ended when "Towering Inferno" left theaters in 1975.
When you are 14 years old (as I was when I first saw this) EVERYTHING seemed better. Now some 30 years later you see how bad things are these days and you would give anything TO GO BACK TO 1975. So I guess watching this now you do get taken back to a simpler era when even bad movies entertained you!
After reading your post, I realize you are correct. I saw this movie in the theaters back in 74 and thought I really enjoyed. Watching it on TV ten or fifteen years later, all I could think was, "God, this movie is really stupid."
