Errors

The number of factual errors is incredible. Just a few: Dana Andrews with no headset, Nancy being able to hear the audio at first w/o headphones in the cockpit with the gaping hole, plane flying with half flaps, chase plane leaves after Heston on board (should have followed down to make sure landing gear down). And so many more!

Another error was the pilot who was flying the multi-engine prop plane that crashed into the airliner said to ATC that he was flying VFR, when he was clearly flying over a broken cloud ceiling at 10,000 ft. He would need to be flying IFR to fly over a ceiling (broken or overcast cloud coverage).

And with no communication with the control tower, how did Heston navigate the 747 to Salt Lake City Airport?

reply

I had the idea that they had an escort back to Salt Lake, so I figured Heston had something to follow.

reply

The correct term would've been VMC. He was on an IFR flight plan.

reply

It's not incorrect to state you are flying VFR or IFR. It's a very common expression. VMC and IMC describes the flying conditions.

That's what I stated. You must have read it wrong.

Dana Andrews didn't have to be using a headset. Many general aviation aircraft of the era, including the Baron, had cockpit speakers for audio. A headset is better, but not mandatory.

reply

Exactly. Headsets of that era didn't provide that much noise cancellation. Most general aviation pilots didn't wear them.

The call letters for the twin engine plane didn't match the numbers and letter markings on the exterior of the plane.
