NO ONE can replicate or replace the incredible James Garner. He created the essence of that character during filming of The Americanization of Emily and made it his own.
IF there ever is to be a Rockford reboot then the only man alive capable of realistically pulling off the essence of James Scott Rockford is Bruce Campbell.
I kind of think that sort of quality acting, especially with the quick delivery humour (brilliant lines)is out of fashion now. But for me it would have to be Michael Keaton - just look at "Multiplicity".
Cusack is 6-3 compared to James Garner's 6-2, so size and body type is comparable. Although he's a little too old at 49 for Jim (who was 46 when the show debuted), he has a boyish look and could pass for early 40s.
I'd take a shot with Martin Sheen as Rocky, although Sheen is in his mid 70s and Rocky is supposed to be mid-60s. Rocky is supposed to be short, barrel-chested (compared to Jim). Gibson and Bridges are too big.
Dennis Becker: Jeremy Piven. Yeah, he and Cusack have alredy been in some movies togteher, but it's a good thing.

4) You ever seen Superman $#$# his pants? Case closed.
James Garner was Jim Rockford and will always be Jim Rockford. I wouldn't recast some inferior rehash of a classic. Didn't they make a ripoff movie a few years ago with Dermot Mulroney as Rockford and some random black dude playing Angel?
I wouldn't mind a movie version if it had a fairly high level cast and was done as a "prestige project."
Somebody mentioned Russell Crowe as Jim. That might work, although Crowe is aging out of the part (Jim is supposed to be about 40 whe he takes up the PI business.
