OKG853?
Where did it come from and what does it mean?
Spenser with an "S", like the poet.
I think Garner is from Oklahoma - I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
shareI think I read it here on imdb. OKG853.
What I read was James Garner, yes was from OK. The G is for Garner and he got his first paid acting job in august 1953. Not usre if it's true but I'll buy it.
The one time the plate number was spoken out loud on the show, the thug read out the numbers first, then the letters.
shareThe license plate on Jim Rockford's Pontiac Firebird Esprit was 853OKG. During 2 episodes from season 1 a mistake was made and it was 835OKG. James Garner in 2002 made a request to the California DMV for a personal license plate 853OKG for his Mini Cooper. His request was denied.....
shareYou'd think he would've driven something a little sportier than a Cooper.
shareBoth the thug and rwilkins2 are correct -- the plate was 853OKG (which Garner claimed stood for "Oklahoma Garner," though he had no explanation for the 853). Here's a screen shot:
