Why Angel, Dennnis, and Rocky were so integral to the show....

They showed how Rockford was different. A man who could have a friendship/relationship with men so different from one another.

Rocky is old fashioned, honorable, "country strong" and fairly naive when it comes to con men, crooked police, etc. Rockford is much more savvy. But he is honorable and loyal as well just like rocky

Rockford can be a world class con man at times, but he is nothing like angel - a con man with no spine, loyalty or conscience. His loyalty to angel despite angel's disloyal nature shows his character. I loved this relarionship because it was like an older brother and his troublesome younger brother.

Dennis is law and order. Jim does a lot to get on the wrong side of cops, but at the end of the day he and Dennis always end up as allies. This is maybe the best relarionship on the show, because it shows hke Rockford can do things cops can't and vice versa.

Maybe his 3 relationships show the 3 sides of Rockford.
Rocky - Strong, honorable, dependable
Angel - Conning, sneaky, cowardly
Dennis - Law, order, trustworthy

I like your take. You can definitely see parts of him in all 3.

one of the funniest moments for me was when he saw angel on TV -- wearing his jacket

My favorite moment with Angel is when he has a lot of money and is living in a penthouse and yet a hooker still won't sleep him. Priceless!

Beth was pretty important too! I just glanced at a review for one of the episodes I just watched, "The attractive nuisance", and got pretty bummed out when I read the line "see you in 1996, Beth". I was hoping she'd stick around until the end of season 4...but I think this episode aired at the end of 77 so she probably didn't renew her contract for 78.

There was a contract dispute resulting in her leaving. The show was run by three different outfits, which complicated matters.
