This show was...

like a wonderful play that you didn't want to end. First, Rhoda was so endearing and her self-depricating, incseucre demeanor was wonderful (I mean that in a good way). IMO it had such a great ensemble cast - Ida, Brenda and Joe. I just signed up for Netflix and have rediscovered it again. I hate the current drivle of sit-coms that are put out these days. This show was one of the first to show real people that weren't perfect. I, of course, loved loved loved Nancy Walker as Ida, the lovable Jewish mother. She would always dig in to everyone with that cute smile on her face. Even New York was used as a co-star. I could rave on for days about this show, but I gotta keep watching some old reruns!

what a great show...and nearly every episode has a terrific actor that we'd see before or soon to be stars. Louise Latham, Henry Winkler, Linda Lavin, Barbara Sharma (who'd become a regular).

the subject matter was inovative and pretty frank for the time...divorce, pre-marital sex, Martin leaving Ida for 6 months, etc.

the whole MTM stable of shows were wonderful!

Rumor has it that Linda Lavin's character "Linda" was going to be a recurring character on the show to play Rhoda's wealthy business partner (and foil on the comedy). Allegedly, she and Harper didn't get along all that well on that one episode, so they chose Sharma's character to be the one to go into business with Rhoda.

CBS saw TV talent in Lavin, and gave her the show "Alce" in 1976.

i never heard that rumor...i heard the opposite--that they were good friends as working New York actresses. i recently saw a picture of them at this years re-Emmy festivities.
funny how rumors go

During 1974 and 1975, she had a recurring role on "Barney Miller" as Detective Wentworth, so I doubt she would have been available to be a recurring character on "Rhoda", even if the rumor was correct. When she was cast to star in "Alice", her Barney Miller character just disappeared without any explanation.

i forgot about her BARNEY MILLER gig.
she's had great success with her return to theater.

Really? What channel?

Most young people these days, if they know Rhoda at all, it's usually from Nick at Nite memories. But, my memories go back even further than that. I remember it on, in about 1995-96, on Comedy Central, back before CC became geared mostly to men, back when it really was about *comedy*---for EVERYONE.

Ah, the good ol' days of Comedy Central---back when the line-up consisted of AbFab, Rhoda, Soap, and Dr. Katz! And, special day of female stand-up, every week! And, funny 1970s and 80s movies! Yeah, baby!

I am the movies I love! (^_^)
