Rhoda talking Brenda out of a nose job

I disagreed with Rhoda. If it would make Brenda happier--and looks do count in the world--there is no reason to feel like she was masking her insecurity with the surgery. People have nose jobs all the time, and it's not looked down upon.
Brenda is the one who has to live with her looks, not Rhoda.

I think the overall point of the episode was that Brenda wanted a nose job for the wrong reasons, or at least I think that is what was implied. Through witnessing Brenda's insecurity, Rhoda was able to figure out how she (Rhoda) had a distorted view of herself, and she was trying to make Brenda see it. Brenda's reasons for wanting the nose job wouldn't have been satisfactory for Brenda ultimately. Chances are, because her own self-image was distorted, Brenda would've come up with another procedure to undergo so that her looks could be improved. It wasn't meant to serve as commentary against nose jobs but more as a "recognize your own self-beauty" type of message. The thing is, Brenda wouldn't have stopped with her nose, and Rhoda knew it. That's why she was trying to get Brenda to reconsider. At least that's how I took it.

Yes, that was the point,to make Brenda understand her own self-beauty, but in all honesty, Brenda did have the type of nose that women do refine. I don't think it's one or the other; you can still have a sense of self-beauty and seek outer-beauty.

I bet if Kavner actually had her nose done, they would be a plotline muck like her weight loss. There is fine line between getting a nose job because of a distorrted view of yourself, and not. It's not a question of needing a nose-job, but just wantng to look prettier. If Kavner looked like Sharon Stone and wanted a nose-job,than it would a more obvious case of distortion.
