Meh...
So, I've given Rhoda the ole college try. I really did.
I remember catching an episode here and there on Nick At Nite during the '90s and I recall enjoying it. I got halfway through season two and I had to quit.
Unlike The Mary Tyler Moore Show or The Bob Newhart Show, which 40+ years later are both still laugh-til-you-cry funny, Rhoda didn't age well to me.
Each episode had a weak story line that seemed lackluster and incomplete. It's like a situation is established as background fodder and then Rhoda wisecracks through the whole thing for 20 minutes. It became more and more clear to me that Rhoda was strictly a vanity show for the fans (which isn't a bad thing).
I think Rhoda really shined only when she was paired with Mary. The two of them (characters and actresses) had such great chemistry and comic timing that I wished they would've had Mary make more guest appearances. Or at the very least continue Rhoda's phone calls to Mary through out the season to reinforce that they're still best friends.
Also, they never seemed to manage to create a strong body of supporting characters that had chemistry. The Mary Tyler Moore Show survived without glitch after Rhoda left because there was still an incredibly strong body of equally funny, fully fleshed characters that all had incredible chemistry.
And I know you guys will probably scoff at me for this, but I absolutely hated Ida Morgenstern. Nancy Walker is funny as hell, but the overbearing, manipulative, rude and nasty Ida was too unlikable for me even if she had some of the best lines.
So guys, any reason why I should continue watching or am I better off quitting while I'm ahead?
