Back in the days when a high school diploma was not just given out to every student who sat in class. Those were the days before social promotion!

Born in 1941, so she would have graduated in 1959. Back in those days, a high school diploma counted for more. Most women weren't expected to go to college. People could enter the workforce with a hs diploma and eventually work their way up the ladder. Nowadays, you need a Bachelor's degree to even go to an interview.

So very true. Those were the days when a High School diploma actually meant more than a piece of paper. Even as she said this in her opening in 1974, it meant something back then (nearly 40 years ago).
