I never liked Joe and Rhoda together, mainly because I never liked Joe and it always felt like he was just using Rhoda until the next best thing came along, like he never really had any intention of committing to her for the rest of his life, buying a house together, having kids, etc. and all that goes along with a lifetime commitment. I think that this article is correct in saying that there was very little chemistry between Valerie Harper and David Groh, and it carried over to the small screen. The first two seasons were very boring for me, because Rhoda and Joe together just wasn't very funny. Half of the episodes seemed to be about Rhoda being insecure because she had married a great looking guy, and the other half seemed to be about the supporting characters just to give the writers something to write about.
For me, the best episodes were season 3, where Rhoda is making the transition from being married to Joe to being a single woman on her own again. I thought the writing was fresh and funny, her new apartment was a refreshing change, and the supporting characters, with the exception of Sally Gallagher, were well written and acted. That season made me feel like I would have wanted to hang out with Rhoda and Brenda, and they had some fun and wacky adventures together.
Just as bad as the Joe seasons for me were the last two seasons with Jack Doyle. I never liked that character, nor found him to be funny, just kind of depressing and obnoxious. The costume company was gloomy, and Tina and Ramon weren't funny either. I also hated that they began to focus the story line on Ida and Martin, especially when the separated. That was just not believable and only served to prove that the writers were completely out of fresh ideas.
I have always thought that David Groh was miscast as Rhoda's husband. Rhoda needed a man with humor. I have heard that Judd Hirsch was a contender for the role. He would have been perfect.
shareHirsch was allegedly the first choice, but he couldn't accept it at the time.
I always liked the last three seasons better, myself. Never liked her when she was married.
