Rhoda's sister on the MTM show; never seen again
Odd.
But not unusual; the continuity between characters on their show of origin and their spin-off series often shows a large gap. The 'Florida Evans' character on the series Maude was a great example of this. There were major differences between her character on that show, and on her own series Good Times.
And of course, as to disappearing characters--the infamous 'Big Brother' Chuck Cunningham from Happy Days. In the first couple of episodes and then never seen again; and no explanation given for his disappearance.
I've thought about starting a thread on one of the Classic TV boards on just this topic. How many others can you name?
Rhoda had an older sister named Debbie and a brother named Arnold on the MTM show...but they weren't part of her show.

It wasn't a family member, but in an early episode of "Charlie's Angels", Kim Basinger had a small part and at the end it was announced that she was going to be the Townsend Agency's new secretary...never to be seen or heard from again...
shareGolden Girls...
There is so much in-continuity on that show regarding neighbors, friends, and family members (siblings, children, etc.) you would need a spreadsheet to keep track. Vist that forum here on IMDb and search through the topic thread titles and see what you come up with.

The Facts of Life was also confusing. The show went from about eight girls to four in one season without a real explanation.
shareALL IN THE FAMILY/ THE JEFFERSONS:
On AITF, we are first introduced to Louise Jefferson, Lionel Jefferson, and Louise's brother-in-law "Henry Jefferson", because her husband George (Henry's brother) said "he'd never step foot in the honky's house". I believe Henry comes back for at least one more episode (maybe two?) before we meet George.
Once they spun off to 'The Jeffersons' in 1975, there is never another mention of brother Henry, nor does he ever come for a visit. I believe there were also mentions of Weezy having sisters, though we never see them on the show.
(My understanding is - Norman Lear wanted Sherman Hemsley as George, and no one else, after seeing him on-stage on B'way. SH was not available for the first few eps when we meet The Jeffersons, due to his theater commitment. They needed to fill a role with an older black male character for a few story lines, to take the place of George, so 'Uncle Henry' was created.)

On The Big Valley the youngest legitimate Barkley son, Eugene, made few appearances in season one and by season two had never existed.
shareOn Barney Miller, Gregory Sierra appeared as a regular in the role of Chano Amenguale for the first two seasons. The actor left the show to star in the short-lived AES Hudson Street; the character disappeared, never to be mentioned again and with no explanation given for his abrupt departure from the squadroom.
shareIf I remember correctly, there were missing family members on the sitcom 'SOAP'. Jessica had three or four children in the beginning, but then as time went on I think she only had two. I believe one of her sons was dropped (I may be wrong, but I think she had 2 sons and 2 daughters in the very beginning).

Loved Soap! Actually, Jessica had three kids, two daughters (Eunice and Corinne), and the youngest child was a son named Billy. Later it turned out that Corinne was actually jessica's brother's daughter and that Jessica and her husband had adopted her.
