Why Didn't Brenda Marry Benny?

So I only got through a few episodes of season 5, but there was one where Brenda and Benny decide to get married, after Ida's blessing. The following episode then involves Brenda meeting the parents. I didn't watch after that, but based on the episode summaries (and the fact that the series ended mid-season), was Brenda/Benny just thrown out the window? I thought it would have been nice to show them married; were the writers nervous because it never worked out between Rhoda and Joe? Thoughts on this would be appreciated!

From what I remember was reported 35 years ago*, there was a plan to 'spin' Brenda and Benny off into their own show in the Spring of 1979, as one of the last few episodes of "Rhoda" (I don't think there was any intention to bring 'Rhoda' back for a 6th season in September, 1979). If the eps of "Brenda" were indeed a hit, hey were going to give them a full season in September, 1979. I believe the idea was that Brenda and Benny were going to move to the suburbs in Connecticut, from what I remember (I think Nancy Walker was going to be part of the cast as well).

Of course, those plans fell apart - 'Rhoda' was abruptly cancelled in December, 1978.

* I believe this was in "US" Magazine, when they had an extensive TV section. The headline was: "Will viewers say 'I do' to 'Brenda'?" , if I recall correctly.
