Carlton the Doorman /Beverly Sanders

sorry, but I don't get this neverending gag that is not funny.

..and Beverly Sanders with that somewhat self-effacing delivery again and again.(yes,we know you're pregant,it's a burden, and your husband will find a way to lay you...ok)

reply

She was falling-off-the-couch funny when we first meet her on 'Rhoda's Shower'. Perfect delivery of her well-written lines. I agree, the running joke of her being the tired, worn-out wife/mom grew stale as the show went on.

How about some of the other please-kill-me-now catch-phrases, such as:

KISS MY GRITS

How're YOU doin'

I found my thrill

Heeeeeeyyyyyyy

I'm watching season 2 right now and it's a train wreck - I cannot believe this is of the same minds as the Mary Tyler Moore Show.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.

I've never seen a show so desperate to come up with supporting characters. The only true appealing character (outside of Rhoda herself) was Julie Kavner as Brenda. Joe was kind of a jerk. Ida was funny, but in limited doses. Gary was really annoying. Benny was boring. Anne Meara wasn't funny. And then they tried to take these one-shot characters (like Beverly Sanders and Myrna Morgenstein) and tried to make them recurring when they weren't worthy.

reply

I honestly think they tried too hard. They were trying to get a supporting cast that would click, as they did on MTM show, and they never really could. They never found the right chemistry with really likable people (and supposedly, they didn't want to rely too heavily on Ida and Martin, because they didn't want a show focused just on Rhoda's family - they wanted the focus on Rhoda living in NYC, and the 'friends' she makes).

They had the same problem with "Phyllis" - none of her supporting characters ever 'stuck'.

I slightly disagree about 'Phyllis.' I think the Mother Dexter character certainly stuck. She was wonderful and the perfect foil to Phyllis.

LOVED HER!!! When Judith Lowry died, so did the series.

She did - and she (more or less) replaced her disappearing daughter Bess (who was gradually being written out of the show). So she stuck, and her in-laws stuck )for at least two seasons). Sort of like on RHODA - she had Brenda and her parents in the cast.

But outside those three characters, Phyllis got a whole new supporting cast in season 2 - and as we all know, none of them really clicked either.
