36 years ago today...

36 years ago today (Saturday, December 9, 1978) RHODA aired for the very last time (though four more eps were in the 'can' to air in January, 1979). The last episode to air was the horrible episode "The Total Brenda".

Ratings slipped drastically in Season 5, as the network moved the show to Saturday nights at 8:00, which was then considered 'the graveyard' for networks. The show also moved away from Rhoda, and focused more on sister Brenda - which CBS was gearing up to launch as a spin-off in March. CBS pulled the show during most of the all-important 'November Sweeps', airing only one episode on November 11 ("Martin Comes Home") to low ratings.

The show came back on December 2, and then again on December 9 - to horrible ratings. CBS announced it's cancellation the following Monday morning (Dec 11), and filled the slot with other programming the following Saturday night. The remaining four episodes were eventually aired in syndication.

"The Total Brenda" was classic episode. But why the network's sudden shift from giving Brenda her own show to deep-sixing it altogether? Even if "Rhoda" were canceled, that doesn't mean Julie Kavner didn't deserve a chance. Not that she is complaining or anything! :)
