Anne Meara ("Sally Gallagher" S-3) dead at 85
Anne Meara, who played wise-cracking, sarcastic stewardess 'Sally Gallagher' in the first half of Season 3, died Saturday at the age of 85. No cause of death has been determined.
"Rhoda" began season 3 without 'Joe' (David Groh, 1939-2010), but 'Sally' was added to the cast as a New York stewardess who lived near Rhoda and Brenda in Manhattan. The two sisters meet Sally in the beginning of the season at a "Singles" weekend and roomed with her.
"Sally" was supposed to be a sexy stewardess in her late 30s (to match Rhoda's age), even though Meara herself was 10 years older and looked to be in her 40s on the show. She had no chemistry with the rest of the cast, and was soon written out mid-season with no explanation (her last show would be the 'New Year's Eve' show in 1976).
This makes just about all the cast from the series (1974-78) dead, except series star Valerie Harper, 75 (who has been battling brain cancer for 2 years) and co-star Julie Kavner, 64.
