I am sure Charles considered him like is son. I always thought that he knew deep down that Solomon was actually the son of a liaison Caroline had with another man.
Well, as you’re well aware Anna, Chuck was a notorious prankster. So one dark and moonless evening, he had arranged to meet Caroline at a nearby line shack for a rendezvous. But Chuck had different plans, and earlier in the day he had ran into Joe Kagan and decided to include him in the prank. Joe agreed to Charles plan, and replied “Yes sir Mr Ingalls, I’d love to help you scare the daylights out of Mrs Ingalls”. But in his mind, Joe had replaced the word "scare", with a word of much different meaning. The evening came, and Chuck sent Joe towards the unlit line shack. Aside from “Chuck’s” voice sounding a little husky, and Ma walking Bo-legged for a week following the incident, no one was the wiser (Except for Joe of course). And Chuck never questioned why it took Joe 45 minutes to “scare the daylights” out of Ma, or the knocking sounds coming from the little shack. 9 months later, Pa finally got the son that he had always wanted, but upon seeing his son for the first time, he immediately thought of Joe, and exclaimed: “Why that son of a!" But it was too late, as Joe had already moved on to Gold Hill to join Father Murphy.
And that kids is the story of Solomon. (Note: It varies slightly from the biblical version 😀 )

shareCharles is stupid enough to believe Solomon was his son with Caroline. He actually believed Mary, Carrie and Grace were his!! Probably also Laura, but she had to have inherited her stupidity and lack of impulse control from someone, so I can see her being her father's daughter.
