I remember all the one-liners and needling that would go on between James and Willona and wonder if that could have disguised an underlining sexual tension between the two that neither could act upon for obvious reasons, James being loyal and devoted to his wife and Willona being Florida's best friend. Having a very attractive neighbor dropping in all the time it might be reasonable it could spark a hidden attraction upon James' part, after all everyone is human and perhaps a subconscious feeling of guilt on his part and the best way to deal with it would be to submerge it into snapping at each other back and forth to mask it.

I never got the impression that James was attracted to Willona. In fact, he gave off an air of annoyance as she would always barge into their apartment with gossip to share with Florida.

Plus her independent attitude was something that James never could get his head around and on one occasion calling her too picky for her own good. I think she was too "modern" for his tastes

Plus James never gave any suggestion that there was he was interested in any other woman than his own wife. He was very affectionate towards Florida and you could see by the way he looked at her, held her in his arms and kissed her, that he still found her desirable.

I've always felt a closeness between James and Wilona, and yes it added to the sexual tension. She was a hip beautiful and independent woman, while Florida was comfortable in her roll(e) as a housewife and mother.

I understand how you can feel that way because in many sitcoms when they have a love/hate friendship it ends up turning into a romance like Kyle and Max on 'Living Single.' There are a few more shows that were like that too, but I can't remember which ones now.
